Anyway, the last time I emailed you I was going to a conference in Princeton, NJ and at the end of the conference was planning on stopping at the New Jersey Archives on the way home. I was the last presentation at the conference and opened byreferencing Isaac as a member of the Amwell Township road crew since this was a highway engineering conference. As luck would have I turned out to be the last speaker at the closing business session inviting everyone to next year's conference in Pennsylvania. The result was I wass the last to leave the hotel. I went on to Trenton anyway intending to go to the state archives. Things have changed there since 9/11. Visitor parking is limited to one area of the underground parking garage and you go through several checkpoints where you present ID. Following the directions of the guards, I ended up in the State Library not the State Archives. I decided to see what they had before I tried to find my way to the Archives. I was particularly interested in seing if I could find the road Isaac was responsible for maintaining. I found several maps including one that had been developed from the early deeds for property in Hunterdon County. After spending some time with the maps, I wandered throughtheir collection of local history and genealogy books. I found"The History of East Amwell Township" published in 1976 bya the East Amwell Bicentenial Commission. And, lo and behold, it not only talked about our progenitor, it also gave directions to where he lived. I also spent a lot of the afternoon in the library's copy room feverishly xeroxing parts of maps and pages from this and other books.I had really wanted to get to the Archives so with the afternoon almost gone, I dashed out of the library and went up the street to the Archives. They let me in but they were closing for the day. = = = = Since there was plenty of daylight left, I left Trenton and went to Hunterdon looking for Isaac's road and homestead. I stopped in Lambertville and picked up a disposable camera. I've attached several photos form Isaac's farm and the surrounding area. According to the book, Isaac had 10 acres bounded by the present Toad Lane and New Jersey Route 31. His land was on the north side of ToadLane. If that is correct, his land now lies in Raritan Township which was carved out of the original Amwell Township. The first picture(IMG012) shows the corner looking north up the hill. The land isnow a suburban development just north of Ringoes. The second picture (IMG025) shows the site of St. Andrew's Church and graveyard. Isaac's father-in-law, George Thomson, received a large block of land from his aunt and from looking at the old deed map Isaac's land certainly was part of his father-in-law's property. George Thomson gave the land for St. Andrews. The third picture is of the Old Dutch Church mentioned as one of the boundaries of Isaac's road work. It is on the ridge south of Isaac's about a half-mile away on the Old York Road. The third photo (IMG018) was taken from Toad Lane andshows the Old Dutch Church. There is a very large and ancient cemetery next to this church with tombstones dating back to the 1700's. Many of the older ones have weathered away. I didn't spend much time looking at them, but I didn't find any Tobins or Thompsons. = = = I'm looking at the size of the files I'm sending and realize I better stop now. There are a few other photos of interest but since these are so large, I'll send them later. =
