Jack Robert Tessman, professor emeritus at Tufts University, died July 18 of a hemorrhagic stroke in Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, Calif. He was 86. Dr. Tessman was a native of New York. He received his bachelor's degree in physics from the City College of New York and his doctorate in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as a physicist for the Army during World War II and later joined the Tufts faculty as a full professor, retiring in 1986. Dr. Tessman was also on staff of the MIT Science Teaching Center. In addition, he was the author of ''My Back Doesn't Hurt Anymore," a guide to eliminating back pain. Dr. Tessman leaves his partner, Rosalind Singer; two daughters, Debora Bolter of Newton and Lisa of Binghamton, N.Y.; and one brother, one sister, and three grandchildren. Services have been held.
