The Sheets (Sheetz et al) family owned property adjacent tothe Blasing Farm. John Sheets enlisted in the GAR at the same time as August. It is likely they were friends. Also possibly George Beals??

1923 Waukesha City Directory: 36 Acres of property in Brookfield, valued at $5000, still in the name of August Blazing, though he'd been dead for some time.

1925 Waukesha City Directory, same as above

Obiturary from Waukesha Freeman, December 29, 1922:

"August Blasing, aged 87, pioneer resident of Elm Grove, passed away at his home in that village Saturday morning. Mr. Blasing was born in Germany and came to America when a youngboy.
"The funeral was held from the home at 1:30 pm Tuesday. Thedeceased is survived by four sons and one daughter; Albert of this city, Edward at home, William and Arthur of Milwaukee, and Mrs. William Calkins, Stevens Point.
"Mr. Blasing was a member of the W.B. Cushing Post, Grand Army of the Republic."

In 1904 Waukesha City Directory, he is listed on rural route12 in Brookfield. A search in 2000 concluded that Rural Route 12 is now called something else. Later searches in Marchof 2000 revealed that this is now Watertown Plank Road, which goes through an upper middle class Milwaukee suburb (stillcalled Elm Grove). The home is no longer standing.

His farm was in Section 26 of Brookfield Township. The ZionGerman Evangelical Church and Cemetery are located in the same section. August, his wife, and several of their childrenare buried in this well-kept cemetery across from the property he once owned.

I have copies of the report of his farm production in 1880 if anyone is interested. They had one "milch cow" that dropped a calf, which was sold living. 3 horses on hand. 100 pounds of butter made, 50 doz eggs produced, etc. etc.

August was born in Hansfelde, Posen Prussia. This area has changed hands countless times. In 1837 when August Blaesing was born it was in the Posen (now Posnan) region of the Prussian Empire. It was on the border between the ethnically German and ethnically Polish parts of Prussia. It is now a Polish city called Klosowo, about 100 miles ENE of Berlin. Therewere a great many Blaesings living in the area at the time and many have descendents in the United States, especially Wisconsin and Minnesota, but also Kansas and Iowa and probablyother states. The Blaesing/Blasing enclave in Ohio seems tobe descended from a German family that lived in the Alsace-Lorrain region of France (Joseph Blasing being the head of that family). There is another branch that settled in upstateNY.

There is very strong evidence that August Blaesing came to the United States on the ship Rudolph on July 30, 1855. The incoming passenger list from New York lists an Aug. Blesinger, age 17, from Prussia. The spelling with "e" in the first syllable instead of "ae" coincides with the pronunciation ofthe name and the "er" suffix was often used haphazardly withGerman surnames (perhaps in this case to emphasize Germanness as opposed to Polishness, but that's a guess). The placesand dates all correspond to what is known from birth records and August's emigration papers. Interestingly, there is another group of Blesingers on the same ship. The names and dates all correspond to a family that settled in Henderson Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. Martin Blesinger, the headof this family was from a town called Schloppe, no more than15 miles south of Hansfelde (his name was also Blaesing inchurch records from Posen, but Blesinger on the passenger lists). On the outgoing passenger list from Hamburg, August Blesinger is listed at the end of this Blesinger family; on the incoming list he is 9 spaces ahead of the Blesinger family. The evidence strongly points to a family relationship between August Blaesing and the Minnesota Blaesings, though thenature of this relationship has yet to be determined (I expect that a trip to Northwestern Poland would be necessary, unless I can make contact with someone descended from the Minnesota family). It is possible that Michael and Martin Blaesing were brothers. One of August's brothers is named Martin;names were often kept in the family.

Efforts to research the siblings of August Blaesing have sofar been fruitless. Why he came alone with another family isunknown. Why he settled in Waukesha while they went on to Minnesota is also unknown.
