Am 10. März 1893, also vor 120 Jahren, wurde der spätere Pfarrer und Heimatforscher Nikolas Groß in der Thiesenmühle in Neipel im Dekanat St.Wendel geboren. Weihbischof Antonius Mönch weihte ihn im Jahre 1920 zumPriester. Vom 1. Januar 1938 an leitete er bis zu seiner Emeritierungam 1. Mai 1968 die Pfarrei Losheim.
In den letzten Kriegsjahren 1944 und 1945 war Losheim Frontort im Westwallbereich. Oft lag der Ort unter Artilleriebeschuss und war Ziel von Luftangriffen bei der Suche nach den V2-Stellungen im Großen Wald. Während seine Pfarrkinder in Stollen und Kellern Schutz suchten, kam NikolasGroß auch mitten im Krieg und unter heftigem Beschuss seinen Pflichtenals Seelsorger nach. Er beerdigte die Opfer des Krieges, besuchte dieGläubigen in den Stollen und bot dort auch Tag für Tag Gottesdienste an. Wie der Vorsitzende des Heimatvereins, Hubert Schommer, von Zeitzeugen erfuhr, setzte sich Groß nach dem Krieg bei den Amerikanern für vieleseiner Pfarrkinder ein und konnte sie so vor der Gefangenschaft bewahren.
Mit dem Wiederaufbau der Kirche (1947 bis 1949) und des Pfarrhauses führte er in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Landeskonservator Dr. Keller umfassende Ausgrabungen durch. Durch diese Arbeiten konnte festgestellt werden,dass hier ein uralter Kultplatz bestand, der schon in keltisch-römischer Zeit eine große Bedeutung hatte. Die Erkenntnisse seiner Bodenforschung unter der Kirche wurden im "Sprechenden Portal" festgehalten. In sechs Bronzeplatten wurden die Vorgängerbauten in zwei Türflügeln des Hauptportals dargestellt. Nach diesen Ausgrabungen widmete er sich der keltischen Vergangenheit von Losheim. Es gelang ihm mit Unterstützung und unter Aufsicht des Konservatoramtes, eine große Anzahl von Hügelgräbernder keltischen Hunsrück-Eifel-Kultur "Im Harscheid" freizulegen. Ohne seine archäologischen Arbeiten wüsste man nichts über manche Römerbauten, über bronze- und eisenzeitliche Grabhügel und die Friedhöfe der Merowingerzeit, über die Kelten, Römer und Franken im Hochwald. Diese wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse erweiterten das Wissen über die Losheimer Vor- und Frühgeschichte. In Zeitschriften, Festschriften und Jahrbüchern wurden die Ergebnisse dieser Bodenforschung der Nachwelt erhalten.
Die Gemeinde Losheim ernannte Nikolas Groß für seine heimatgeschichtlichen und archäologischen Verdienste am 1. Januar 1963 zum Ehrenbürger. Im Jahre 1968 erhielt er vom Bundespräsidenten das Bundesverdienstkreuz.
Seinen Ruhestand verbrachte Groß in Hausbach und starb am 18. September1981. Am 22. September 1981 wurde er in der Pfarrkirche Losheim beigesetzt.
