The 1880 census contains records of families living in the United States and its territories during the latter half of the Great Westward Migration. Thirty-eight states were included in the 1880 census, plus the territories of: Arizona, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Non-organized Alaska was also enumerated, but the "Indian Territory" (now Oklahoma) was not enumerated for non-Indians. Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information he collected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each county was divided into enumeration districts, one for each enumerator. The completed forms were sent to the Commerce Department’s Census Office in Washington, D.C.Federal censuses are usually reliable, depending on the knowledge of the informant and the care of the census enumerator. Information may have been given to a census taker by any member of the family or by a neighbor. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified.

The 1930 Census determined the population of the United States to be 122,775,046. This is an increase of almost 16 percent over the 1920 Census, which reported a population of 106,021,537. This was the 15th decennial census conducted in the United States under authority granted by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution. It was conducted in April 1930, except in Alaska, where it wasconducted in late 1929. Until 2012 the 1930 Census is the latest available to the public, due to 72-year privacy laws. It is based on actual counts of persons living in residential structures.

We undertook the arduous task of deciphering the handwritten pages of the 1940 Census to create a searchable index for the census. This was accomplished gradually, state by state, as we covered more and more of the census. As required by the US Constitution, the census is a federal mandate to count every resident of the United States of America every 10 years. Census data is released to the public72 years after it was taken.Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day. Civil registration — the government recording of births, marriages, and deaths — began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837. Local registration districts had jurisdiction for recording civil events, but were required to send copies of their records each quarter to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. The GRO created indexes to these records which are organized by event, year, and quarter, and thereunder alphabetically by surname.Information included in the index changed over the years. The index always provides the name of deceased, registration district, and reference information (volume and page numbers). From 1866 to March 1969, the index also includes age. Beginning in June 1969 the index includes the deceased’s birth date rather than age. Information provided in the indexcan be used to order a copy of the person’s death certificate for a fee from the GRO through their Certificate Ordering Service. Depending on the year, full death certificates may provide: name ofdeceased, death date, death place, age, sex, occupation, cause of death, name of parent if the deceased is a child, informant’s name, residence, and relationship to the deceased, and date of registration. Note: Information recorded on a death certificate is only as accurate as the knowledge of the person reporting it. It is important to pay attention to who the informant was and their relationship to the deceased. The closer the relationship, the more reliable the information likely is. For years where images of the index are available, be sure to consult the image to verify the informationpresented to you. Sometimes errors happen during the transcription process. For example, a “5” may have inadvertently been transcribed as a “3”. Since there is a fee for ordering certificatecopies from the GRO, it is especially important to make sure all reference numbers are correct before placing an order. Search tip: If an individual had multiple given names, sometimes only one or twoof these names was recorded in the index. In addition, some of the given names may have been recorded by initials only. If you’re having trouble locating someone in the index, try searching by anyof the individual’s known given names, initials, or nicknames.
