John Richard Benzi, Sr, 72 of Guilford entered into rest Thursday, November 3, 2011 at CT Hospice, in Branford, surrounded by his loving family. John was born Sept. 12, 1939 in Guilford, CT, son of the late Arthur Benzi and Mary Natowich Benzi. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Joyce Benzi. Also survived by sons, John Benzi, Jr (Cathy) of Westbrook, CT, Michael (Kathy) Benzi of Natick, MA, William (Karen) Benzi of East Haven, CT, and a daughter Christine Longo (Paul) of Essex, CT. John is survived by grandchildren, Emily, Christopher and Caroline of Westbrook, CT, Brandon, Austin and Bailey Longo of Essex, CT and Fiona and Grace Benzi of Natick, MA. In addition, he is survived by siblings, Arthur Benzi of Greenville, TX, Betsy (Nick) Heery of Madison, CT, William Benzi of Hastings, FL, Maryann (Richard) Bippus of Hanover, MD and sister-in-law, Linda Benzi of Guilford, CT. Predeceased by a brother,Ronald Benzi. Also survived by aunts, many nieces, nephews and cousins. John served as an Airman First Class in the USA Air Force. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, St. George Council #3928of Guilford and past Grand Knight. He retired from SNET after 32 years. He loved to fish and was an avid gardener and cook. His family and friends enjoyed his sense of humor and quick wit. Thanksgivings were a particularly special family day. John will forever be remembered for making these Benzi extended family Thanksgiving days of celebration truly memorable ones, which will be forever cherished.

| Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living. | |
