HIRTH, Theodore A. Theodore "Ted" A. Hirth, 89, of Vernon,beloved husband for 65 years of the late Winifred (Lennon) Hirth, went to see his maker and loved ones on Friday, (October 19, 2007) in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Born in Rockville, son of the late Martin and Edith (Bates) Hirth, he was a lifelong resident of Vernon. The Aetna Life and Casualty Company in Hartford employed him for 42 years before his retirement in 1982. Ted also served as a supernumerary policeman in Rockville for 18 years. He was a U. S. Armyveteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge and he was taken Prisoner of War. He was a longtime member of Union Congregational Church, Rockville. Ted was a member of the Aetna 39'rs Retirees, the Masonic Veterans, a member of the 28th Division, American Prisoners of War, the V.F.W., the Vernon Grange and the Rockville AARP. He was a 50 year member and was a Past Master twice of Fayette Lodge # 69, A.F. & A.M., Ellington and Ted also was the recipient of the Pierpont Edwards Medal In Bronze; he was a member and Past High Priest of Adoniram Chapter # 18, Royal Arch Masons, Ellington; and he was a member and Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Adoniram Council # 14, Royal & Select Masters, Ellington. After retirement, Ted taught Driver Alive classes for 23 years. He is survived by his son Paul and his wife Linda of Olathe, KS; two grandsons, Frederick and Robert also of Olathe and his granddaughter Kristen and their mother Elsie of Shawnee Mission, KS.

| Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living. |
