| | In Virginia / West Virginia births began to be universally reported to counties in 1853 with a few counties collecting birth records as early as the late 1700s and early 1800s. In 1917, the West Virginia Department of Health Vital Registration office began collecting the county reports of births and issuing official state birth certificates from that year through the present, as well as creating ���delayed” birth records by affidavit. The records in this collection were compiled by county in a few phases which results in some non-uniform year coverage due to changes in selection criteria andprivacy regulations. Also gaps are present due to record loss.
