Dorothy(Dot) H. Smith, age 93 of Pennsville, NJ, passed awayon Tuesday, August 16, 2005. Born in Connecticut to the late Ernest Theron and Esther Norda DuKanney Alling, her family's roots were in the New Haven Connecticut area. Allington, Connecticut, a suburnof New Haven was named after her ancestors who were patriots in the Revolutionary War.
She and her family moved to Salem County, NJ in 1942. During World War II she worked for N. J. Bell Telephone. She was the sales and rental agent for the 52 homes built in Churchtown after the war. Later she was the mailroom supervisor for both the St. Francis Hospital and Wilmington General Hospital in Delaware, a switchboard operator at Salem Hospital and held various jobs in other area hospitals. She held a full-time job until she was well into her 80s.
She was the recipient of the "Lifetime Achievement Award" presented by the American Cancer Society and did volunteer work for the "Mentor Program", the Salem County Memorial Auxiliary and the Salem County Election Board.
She was an active member of the Pennsville Sunshine seniors, and the Salem Oak Singers and had been a member of the Pennsville Couples Club, the Pennsville Methodist Church and Harold Peterson's singers group.
She loved music and played the piano for various local social organizations, including the Catholic Church luncheons, numerous nursing facilities and restaurants throughout the tri-state area. Whenever someone was needed to play the piano, her name was always mentioned.
She never missed a performance given bythe Pitman Hobo Band or plays presented by local schools. At the time of her death she was a member of the St. George's Episcopal Church in Pennsville.
Survived by her daughter, Joan Alice "Sam" Hutton; granddaughters, Stephanie, Joan Willson and Joanne Pratt Hutton; brother Donald T. Alling anda sister, Violet E. Hesse.
Predeceased by her husband Joseph Dodge Smith who died in 1960.
