Verstorben als Charles Miller

*He was born as Johann Carl Daniel Mueller on July 28, 1834 in
Wittenberge (Germany) and learned the profession of a carpenter.
In 1854 he went to America. 1855-57 carpenter in Westport (Missouri),
1858 working in a sawmill in Liberty, Clay County (Missouri), 1860.
In Kansas City, 1861 Volunteer at a Home-Guard-Unit and a Missouri-Volunteer-Unit (recorded on the tombstone!), 1861 or 1862.
He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh (April 6/7, 1862) Santa Fe New Mexico, and after that he had to leave the army. He fought on the side of the Northern States.
A farmer in Twin Mounts, since 1869, carpenter in Topeka.
He married in Oct. 25, 1871 in Lawrence, Douglas County *Mary Fishpaw,*
b. abt. 1824/25 (Pennsylvania?), d. Topeka July 17, 1903.
He left Germany because he did not appreciate the conservative prussian politics of restauration after the german revolution of 1848.

On Oct. 5, 1904 he married in Alma, Kansas, *Marie ....?*, born 03.04.1846 in Switzerland near Lake Zurich. When she died, is not known. She lived at least til 1926, and it is not sure, that she isn't buried in Topeka with her husband (see the tombstone, where her death ist not indicated).
In letter (after 1916) his second wife (Marie) wrote about the first wife (Mary Fishpaw): "She was one of these Pennsylvania-Germans, one from the hard pionieer-days, just a little bit too methodist. She didnt let her man drink neither a glass of wine, nor beer, nor smoke a little
pipe. That was too much for an old german".

The two women had children, but from their first marriages. After the first World War, Marie supported the relatives in Germany with money and food-packets.
