Name from BP 2000 #162 Subject: Re: [BP2000-L] 1874 John Beaty of Ireland obituary Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 11:52:49 From: To: I believe this is the James W. Beaty who was the son of Hoyle K. Beat(t)y and Mary E. Hubbard of Lewis Co., TN. They were married Oct. 20, 1852 in Lewis Co. Hoyle K's father was James Beaty born 1784 in Ireland and is believed to have died between 1850-1860 as his wife, Francis Priest shows up without him in the 1860 census. James and Francis had five sons who served in the Confederate Cavalry. Thomas S. Beatty was in the 24th TN Infantry, was wounded twice at Shiloh and saw Albert Sidney Johnston killed, according to Thomas' son Albert Sidney, who was named for the general. Thomas' 10 month enlistment was up in 1862 and he went home to Lewis Co. to form a cavalry company which became Company H of Jacob B. Biffle's 19th TN Cavalry Regiment. Thomas was elected captain of this company and his brothers; Abraham, Josuah Moses, Hoyle K. and Samuel served as privates under him. Samuel had fingers shot off in battle. These Beattys, with this regiment, surrendered with Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest on May 11, 1865 at Gainsville, AL. Thomas married Ann Virginia (Virgie) Davis (daughter of his 2nd Lt. Nathan Sales Davis) on January 17, 1865 in Lewis Co. They lived in Marshall Co., TN after the war with Thomas' brother Samuel and his wife, Xantippa Cerena Davis (sister of Virgie) and their families. Samuel and his wife, Reverend Samuel Henry Polk, his wife, Virginia Pearl Beatty Polk and other unmarked Beatty graves were in a family plot on what is now the farm of G. W. Van Horn in Marshall Co. Their graves and that of a John Beatty (probably lineage 162 but not yet documented) were moved to the Beechwood Cemetery in Cornersville, Marshall Co., TN. At the time they were moved there were 10-12 unmarked graves in the family plot. They were not moved and are not as yet identified. This from the research of Paul Beatty and the book, "Cemetery Records of Marshall Co., TN by Helen and Timothy Marsh and Ralph Whitesell. I have been to the Beechwood Cemetery and the Beatty Cemetery and have seen these graves for myself. The Beatty Cemetery is near a fence and a few trees in a cow field. The stones (rocks) are scattered and unidentifiable. I hope to eventually find the identity of the Beattys still resting here and mark their graves.
