Birth: Aug. 15, 1901 Kansas City Jackson County Missouri, USA Death: May 16, 1942 Cook County Minnesota, USA Walter was born to Udo Peter Alexander Kleinsteuber and Martha Besecke and had 3 brothers Alfred, Ralph Udo and Victor Willis Kleinsteuber. His mother so wanted a little girl that when her third son Walter was born she allowed his blond curls to grow long! Sadly Walter's mother died when he was 14 years old. Walter was very athletic and was the captain of his track team at Westport High School in Kansas City. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Walter and Edna married, an elopement, on 16 April 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri, Easter Sunday. The story is that they went with Edna's cousin Paul Halterman and his wife Ann to Kansas City, Kansas to a minister that they knew. The minister told them that he could not marry them because their marriage license was for Kansas City, Missouri. The minister knew a fellow minister in KC Missouri (it was the minister's 30th year anniversary that day as well) and he took them to the minister across the river. Walter and Edna were very worried that Paul and Ann would see them crossing town with the minister in the back of their car. The newly weds went home that night with their secret. They lived in their own homes until one night when Walter came to take Edna to a basketball game and her mother said she couldn't go out. Walter then proceeded to say, "Yes she can go out with me tonight, she's my wife!" The cat was then out of the bag. Walter Monroe Kleinsteuber Jr was born on 28 November 1925 and daughter JoAnn Carol Kleinsteuber was born on 26 December 1928. He was a great husband and father! Walter and Edna moved to Minnesota to where Walter's father, Udo, was living. He received a degree in refrigeration and machinery. Udo bought a house for them and Walter went to work for Jersey Ice Cream and was the Superintendent of the Plant. Walter was a well liked person and boss. He was know for his honesty and fairness. Walter died on 16 May 1942. He and his son were fishing on Fowl Lake in Cook County, Minnesota when their boat hit a log and capsized. Walter and Wally were about 50 yards from shore when they hit. Wally got his father up on the logs they hit and tried to push and swim to shore but hypothermia set in and they were both lost. His ashes, and his son's ashes were scattered at their family home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Edna had her ashes scattered there as well when she passed on.
