Birth: Aug. 8, 1835 New Philadelphia Tuscarawas County Ohio, USA Death: Dec. 22, 1923 Poweshiek County Iowa, USA 50th Ohio Vol. Inf. (Co A) & 161st Ohio Inf . (Co A) & 189th Ohio Inf (Co C). GAR. From: Poweshiek Obituaries: John Franklin Shull, oldest son of Peter and Anna Corpman Shull, was born August 8, 1835 near Dover, Tuscarawas county, Ohio, and died December 22nd, 1923 at the home of his son Will, near Guernsey, Iowa, aged 88 years, 4 months and 14 days. He was one of a family of eleven children of which one brother only survives, namely Cephas Shull of Sioux City, Iowa, who is present today. He was married May 4th, 1856 to Jemima Davis who preceded him in death thirty years ago. To this union were born fourteen children of whom the following named nine survive: Mrs. Katy Ann Dunton of Corning, Ark., Mrs. Lydia Hamilton, Mrs. Ellen Butler, Mrs. Alice Shine, John of Frederic, Wis., James, Will, Robert and Mrs. Emma Lemley of Brighton, Iowa. There are also twenty-eight grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. Of the six brothers of the family of which the deceased was one, five were enlisted in the army during the Civil war and saw much hard service although all returned home alive. The family was noted for their extreme strength and hardihood, as well as for their long life and ability to accomplish difficult tasks. Mr. Shull left his wife and three small children at home at the time of his enlistment in the army. He was a member of Company A, 161 Regt. Ohio Vol. Infantry and also of Company C, 189 Regt. Ohio Vol. Infantry, being enlisted twice as indicated. For several years he has been the only Civil war veteran in Lincoln township. He removed from Ohio to Walnut Grove, near Princeton, Illinois in 1867 and in a short time came to his home near Guernsey where he spent the greater part of his life. The last few years he has been making his home with his son Will near his old residence. For a great many years he was a faithful and stalwart member of the Moravian church in the community in which he lived and near which his burial takes place today. He had a strong belief in Christian ideas and spoke many times of late of his faith in Christ and his fearlessness of the time beyond his life.
