Hij begon zijn loopbaan op 16-jarige leeftijd als koksmaatje; uit de
monsterrollen van de stad Groningen (GAG 103.1;144) blijkt dat hij in
1818 met het schip "De jonge Geert" (kap. Adriaan Jacobs Boomgaard) met
bestemming Londen vertrok. Hij heet dan Jan La Kroi, is 16 jaar oud en
verdient 50 cent per week. Later wordt hij varensgezel en zeeman
genoemd. Volgens een artikel in de Prov. Groninger Courant van 7-9-1821
diende Jan la Croy in de 8e afdeling Nationale Infanterie, 3e bataillon.
Hij ging toen met groot verlof. In 1839 werd hij benoemd tot
havenmeester te Lemmer.
