Germantown Loses Oldest Resident With Death of Mrs. Richter
Mrs. Amalia Richter died at
her home in Germantown Friday
morning, Febr. 13 at the age of
95 years, 3 months and 3 days.
Born in Germany, she came to
this country in 1876 and has
lived in the Germantown com-
munity since 1879. Her grand
children and great grandchildren
number over 100.
Mrs. Richter has been ill for
some time before her death.
Funeral services were held
Monday afternoon at St. John
Lutheran church. A short
service preceded, at the home. The
church was filled to capacity
with relatives and the many
friends made during the deceased's
many years in this community.
The Rev. Mr. G. B. Eschenbacher
officiated at the services
Pallbearers were Albert Fiddelke,
Eldred Schuknecht, Martin
Strampe, Carl Carlson, Vernon
Stoeckmann and Harry Meyer.
In charge of the flowers were
Mrs. Harry Hinz and Mrs. Carl
Carlson
Amalia Dorothea Margaretha
Harries Richter was born Nov.
10, 1857 in the province of Hanover,
Germany, the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Harries. In
the year 1876 she emigrated to
America, where she at first
settled in the vicinity of Coopers
Grove, 111. Here she was united
in marriage with Fred Stoeckmann
on May 28, 1878. Ten
children were born to them. One
child died in infancy, one son,
Edward, at the age of 22 years
and one daughter, Ida, at the
age of 29 years.
As long ago as 1870, Mr. and Mrs.
Stoeckmann came to Iowa and
settled in O'Brien county near
Germantown, and during
this time, they were members of
St. John Lutheran Church.
Jan. 1, 1908, Mr. Stoeckmann died.
On Oct 22, 1909, she was remarried
to Conrad Richter.
In 1914 they gave up farming
and moved to her present home in
Germantown. Mr. Richter died
Feb 9, 1937, again leaving her a widow.
Mrs. Richter is survived by two sons,
Ernest of Germantown and Fred
of Slayton, MN; five daughters,
Doris Meyer and Emma Meyer,
both of Springfield, MN.,
Sophie Fiddelke, Ottilie Strampe
and Anna Schuknecht; 29 grandchildren
and 75 great grandchildren and
one great great grandchild.
Also two step children:
Mrs. Clara Meyer and Mrs. Agnes Stoever.
