Er besuchte die Landwirtschaftliche Lehranstalt Poppelau OS (Leiter Direktor Pietrusky) und die Gartenbauschule in Proskau. Seine Tüchtigkeit als Landwirt war weit bekannt. Er arbeitete bis zu seinem 75. Lebensjahr und ritt täglich seine Felder ab. Die Großmutter seiner Frau Minna geb. Seidel, war eine geborene Freytag und mit Gustav Freytag verwandt.
