Notes for this person

Mastholte , Kreis Rietberg Westphalia GermanyImmigrate Ancestor: Johann Caspar Esphorst Ancestor # 110 on Family Tree Maker program Book: A Genealogical Journey of Discovery and Success through the research of the Life of my Immigrant Ancestors, Volume 1: Johann Caspar Esphorst from Moese, Rietberg, Westphalia, Prussia Personal Research Notes of Karen Lynn Irlander Radel Osborne I have been researching my family lines since around 1984; extending one of my ancestral lines to Johann Caspar Esphorst, one of my immigrant ancestors. In 1995 I found Caspar's parents listed on a church marriage record at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in St. Louis Missouri, the church being established on 4 July, 1848. His parents were listed as Anton and Gertrud Ebshorst. No other clues given as to the origin of Caspar Esphorst from Prussia. Then in 1997 a clue was discovered at the library in Salt Lake City, Utah. This clue broke down the brick wall in my genealogical research of Caspar Esphorst. I was elated. Now in 2010, I am ready to start writing my book on all my genealogical findings over the past two and a half decades. The first volume of my books will concentrate on my favorite ancestor Caspar Esphorst. I feel connected to this ancestor through records, many pictures, walking in the ancestral home and hearing the church bells in Mastholte, Rietberg, Westphalia, Germany. I have extended his heritage back to the late 1600's when the surname was actually Brissman(Breische). In the Northwestern part of Germany, for nearly one thousand years certain family names were passed down from farm owner to farm owner, despite interruptions of the natural blood lineage. Therefore, a man changed his surname when he moved onto a farm of a specific status. This tradition helps explain how the surname changed from Brissman (Breische) to Austerweimann and then to Esphorst by the marriage of a women who owned the family farm. My quest for the discovery of my ancestors across the ocean has lead to alot of travel, fun, meeting people, and accumulation of much data on my heritage. I feel that I have collected enough data to start working on my book; it will be titled, " A Journey to Discovery and Success through the Life of my Immigrant Ancestors". Since I have so much information I have decided to break this book into volumes. Each volume being my immigrant ancestor. I will focus on the immigrant ancestor in each volume and branch off to the ancestors and decendents of that immigrant. My first book will concentrate on my most interesting and favorite immigrant ancestor, Johann Caspar Esphorst. Trip to Germany September 2007 Visited the town of Mastholte and met the Esphorst family. Took a tour of the Esphorst farm. Have lots of pictures and memories. Calvary Cemetery where Caspar Esphorst is buried: 5239 West Florissant Avenue St. Louis, MO 63115 Located to the north of downtown St. Louis, MO just off Interstate 70 * From I-70 East take the West Florissant Avenue exit. * Turn Left onto West Florissant Ave. * The entrance to Calvary Cemetery is just past Calvary Drive. * From I-70 West take the West Florissant Avenue exit. * Follow the exit to the Right. * The entrance to Calvary Cemetery is just past Calvary Drive. Calvary Cemetery, in north St. Louis, is the site of the main office for the north and outlying cemeteries in the area. These cemeteries are: Calvary, Sacred Heart, St. Ferdinand, St. Mary's, St. Monica, St. Charles Borromeo and Our Lady. It is the second oldest cemetery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Established in 1854, it contains the graves of many noted persons who were identified with the very beginning of St. Louis. Others were conspicuous in its later development and in national affairs. Some of the old burials and tombstones were moved to Calvary from much older Catholic Cemeteries originally existing in the present downtown area. Many of the cemetery memorials and lot designs are of architectural interest. In addition to those listed in the Historical tour of the cemetery, other well-known St. Louis family names will be noticed on monuments along the self-guided tour, which begins at the main entrance of the cemetery, West Florissant at Union Avenues. Calvary boosts two mausoleum complexes. The indoor, two story Shrine Mausoleum offers single, tandem and companion crypts, and two beautiful chapels for committal services. There is none other like it in the area. The outdoor All Saints Mausoleum and chapel offers single and tandem crypts, and niches for the inurnment of cremated remains. Traditional monument and lawn level marker lots are available iin many sections of the cemetery, as are single and two grave shared family monument lots. Lawn crypts are offered, with many options for memorialization. There are lots designated for private family mausoleums and single sarcophagi units. Contact the office for specific details and pricing information. That is why it took substantially more than 400 Euro of my time. But everything is all right now. I have put together a family tree as well as a list of all marriage entries found in the Church records. It would actually be better to write a narrative report; otherwise an uninitiated reader would never be able to figure this out. The records transcribed are connected with the estate farms of Esphorst and Österwiemann. I will only provide the dates for your St. Vit ancestors. All of these lines could still be developed through extensive research. The ancestors in Rietberg County could be traced back to about 1550. In the meantime, I have had the original records transported from the Esphorst estate farm by Alverdissen to Detmold. If you have time and are interested, you can inquire in the state archive there under my name regarding the file "Esphorst, Moese, vol. 1, page 28. On page 87 you will find how your ancestor Caspar Esphorst was contractually separated from that estate farm; he signed his own signature. With best regards and lots of fun in Germany-the land of your ancestors. To the Brockschneider family: thanks for forwarding the documents and give my best to our friends in Rietberg. Documentation from the archive of the counts of Rietberg found in the Münster State Archive for the Esphorst family, the owners of the hereditary estate farm with full rights-number 44 in Moese. Compiled by Wilhelm Krüggeler in Paderborn for Karen Radel, 2 Ashley Court, St. Charles, Missouri. Dated August 20, 2007. September 19, 1794, minutes of the chamber court, file 404, page 289 Marginal notation: Esphorst in Moese, full heirs Widower et improlis farm owner Mr. Esphorst married Elisabeth Suthuis from the Wiedenbrück community. The bride is from a family with hereditary rights under the noble house and church of/at Herzebrock. She presented from her feudal overlord not only a certificate of release issued at Herzebrock on September 16 of the current year, but also a permission to marry issued on the same day. According to that document the following items were authorized for her dowry coming from the Suthues farm: 40 Reichsthaler in coin that must be paid within three years, four cows, one horse, one foal, one ceremonial dress, and one typical bridal carriage. Because not all of these items are available at the Esphorst farm, the bride's brother, farm-owner Bührmann, paid the groom 80 Reichstaler in the clerk's office and also 79 Reichstaler 8 Groschen in coin. May 13, 1769, minutes of the chamber court, file 401, page 190 Marginal notation: Esphorst The widow of the owner of the Esphorst farm improlis married (for the second time) Johann gerd Österwiemann. The owner of the Österwiemann farm is to pay the groom (a step-son) 30 Reichstaler as a dowry annually on St. Martin's Day consisting, as well as 10 Reichstaler, one horse, 1 foal, two cows, two bulls, one ceremonial dress and a typical bridal carriage. Because the immediate delivery of the last two has been promised, the groom has promised on this day to pay from his own resources an additional sum of 60 Reichstaler to complete his obligations. 1747, settlement contracts, spring court session, bill of sale in Mastholte and Moese, file 2522, page 75. Anna Margaretha Schwale, a daughter of Schwalen, the owner of a farm in Bokel will move onto the farm owned by the Esphorsts and marry Mr. Esphorst. Because both farms are rather small, with the Esphorst farm having some swamp land that is in very poor condition, but is currently being treated by the owner, the bill of sale was negotiated at 60 Reichstaler. 1730, settlement contracts, spring court session, bills of sale in Moese, file 2496, page 74 of the old book Anna Christina Surman from the Langenberg community will move to the Esphorst farm that is indebted under the stipulation a bill of sale be issued to the amount of 40 Reichstaler. Witnesses were Henricus [Henrich] Meyer Hakenkamp and Christoph Bick. 1702, settlement contracts, fall court session, bills of sale, file 2441, page 40 Enneke Grotehoff will move to the Esphorst farm with full hereditary rights for the sum of 60 Reichstaler. I, page 28 1. I, Töniess Esphorst, am the owner of the home on the estate farm of Essphorst (with full hereditary rights) and have been such for about 21 years. 2. The estate farm consists of 3 ½ [units] of bottom land, where it is almost impossible to have good rye crop; also garden land measuring 3 [units] where I can harvest about 4 [measures] of hay annually; 15 [units] of forest were swine can be raised and perhaps 15 fatted annually; approximately 6 [measures] of other wooded land that is the source of firewood; no fish products. 3. There is also approximately 10 [measures] of additional land on our farm used for various other purposes. 4. I pay one Reichstaler annually for fall leases and 2 Reichstaler for spring leases, 2 Reichstaler for servant wages, a total of 18 Reichstaler for leases, 12 Reichstaler for wages for new servants, 8 Reichstaler for treasures [?], 8 Reichstaler for unskilled labor wages, 1 Reichstaler and 4 Groschen for marriage expenses, 1 ß [unit], 6 Groschen for salt, 4 Groschen for sewing, 4 Groschen for a steer, and one fatted pig. 5. I paid to bury my sister's son Johann two years ago. I had paid 43 ½ Thaler for a release certificate. I still owe 50 Reichstaler for his dowry. I am the father of the six children born to my wife and none of them are married yet. 6. None of our property from our inheritance has been disposed yet. I owe 15 Reichstaler to Rickmeyer's son Henrich; I borrowed that from him two years ago and I pay him 1 Lippe [unit] of oats annually for that. I also borrowed 10 Reichstaler from Adrian and Vogt two years ago. And I pay him/them one [unit] of oats annually. And I owe the church 10 Reichstaler and I pay them 18 Groschen annually. 7. I have no other liabilities. Compiled by: Wilhelm Krüggeler Am Rothoborn 4 33098 Paderborn Germany Tel. 0 11 49 5251 25290 www.krueggeler.de www.kaunitz-rietberg.de The extractions contain all important genealogical data from the surviving files of the county of Rietberg, basically marriage contracts, bills of sale, death settlements, release certificates and currency exchanges. The spelling is at times quite arbitrary and I have standardized some terms in order to make them more legible. Most of the fees were paid in Reichstaler (Rtlr.), Schilling (ß), Mariengroschen (Mrg. or Gr.), and Pfennigen (Pf.). In 1765, the bills of sale, death settlements, currency exchanges and release certificates within the county of Rietberg were converted into permanent settlements. That is why such entries disappear and are replaced by court minutes and marriage contracts. Beginning in 1765, the bills of sale and the death settlements only exist in the cases of estate farms beyond the boundaries of the county. A family history or a farm history can be compiled back to about 1550 from the extensive documentation in the Rietberg County archive. An examination of the following documents would be valuable for the compilation of a family history. These documents would be most valuable to describe the daily life on these farms: Court minutes (featuring mostly civil disputes) are preserved since about 1660 Sendbrüchten: these tell of "carnal transgressions" that were heard before a church court Brüchtenprotokolle: these describe the penalties; they begin in 1557 Baumbrüchten, Krebsbrüchten, Krebsfangen: unauthorized felling of trees Zuschläge: information regarding land acquisitions Construction permits: the count issued these for construction of new homes Sales of houses that would be [taken down and] re-assembled elsewhere Count's expenses: what the count paid to craftsmen, employees, etc. Retirement documents: instructions for persons going into retirement Military enlistment papers Loan contracts Church seating assignments Border disputes Witness depositions: these sometimes feature information about the ages of the parties, their familial relationships, etc. Weather reports, such as hail storms, droughts, fires, etc. The land records from the Prussian era can be studied; they provide precise information about real estate, duties paid, property transfers; those records began in 1815. These are generally the most detailed files about specific families at specific estate farms. Was hieß das nun in Geld? Peasantry of Mastholte The idea of the home club Mastholte on the forecourt of the house Reilmann set up a sundial comes down well with the clubs and has been improved to some suggestions. This could, for example, signposts indicate Mastholte peasantry. In this context, a conversation with home club member Anton Herbort was led by the Halaustrasse to find out the name of the peasantry of Mastholte and their backgrounds. Then there is on the east side of the old community Mastholte the fire. The people there were named after generation "Brandleue," it told him about his grandfather, who in turn had it from his grandparents and were thus in his family oral tradition until the present time, Napoleon. The fire had the "Venn Vennkers with the" connected, previously a barren heath with dwarf pines, which had pulled up well into Delbrücker country. Is the designation on the Vennstrasse Venne and still is today. The people there were partial to the mid-19th Century in so-called huts Plagge usual. An earth house with grass sods piled up and an open fireplace in the middle. The last house Plagge had "Oulen bands" heard. His dugout was called by the people at that time the "Oulerrigge". "Oulenbänd" also belonged to the so-called Dutch-goers. Men, the end of May buckled her scythe and immigrated to Holland for several days in order to cut grass for weeks as a day laborer. If "Olenbänd" was then, after many weeks arrived at his home "Oulerigge" that he had been called to his wife from afar: "Ameresen, Thurs weier meaningful ick, with` NEN grout Beul full of money! " The next was the peasantry "Brouk with Bröukers", which dragged on for long part of the old riverbed and domesticated until after went into Lippstadt. The name still reminds Lipper break. Further west the long line of Lippstadt - in today's causeway - the "Kranzdourp with the" Kranzdöurpern was. " It joined, back in the north, the "Wietedourp and" Wietendöurper ". The term grew out of range, you can have here because of the bare landscape look very far. For details about the farming communities of the former village was the home club member Moese Ingrid Wedeking - which is well acquainted with the local history of Moese - be obtained. Then there is the east, long border with the Rietberg, the peasantry Wulfhorst, which got its name from the same farm, which no longer exists. Its former owners have lost their possessions and emigrated to America. He belonged to the so-called Horst farms that together formed a large circle and whose buildings are in part today. It follows in the district court of East Moese Schlepphorst and near the road to the farm Rietberg Haselhorst - today Niggemeier -. He was among other things, the main street and a school Mastholte his name. Furthermore, in the former village Moese, Esphorst the property at the Lange Straße dam and nest in Katthagen. Bokeler in communal districts to close the circle, hedgehogs Horst, Horst and Under Ahnhorst. Immediately in the wake of the town center to the west of Mastholte Katthagen to explain with defensive wall. It follows the peasantry Wimmelheide, which in turn stands for heathland. Here too, courts, who still called "Wimmel" anchored in the name, such as Wimmelmeier or Wimmelbücker. The north of Moese stands for a bog area. The "Hammoor" - is relatively fertile ground here today - was the 19th hereditary tenants of to the 20th Century made it arable. These were partly similar to bog depressions exist, which had to be fed in and straightened, what has been accomplished by the hereditary tenants with laborious manual work. 50 years ago the great Hamkuhle still recalled the time the wells. The "grass-angle" was already out of fertile soil and was the seat of the von Balke, a mansion inhabited and had the say in the environment. Between the center and the "Hammoor" of the "blanks". An area on the islands used to be possible only on a settlement amount was. Between the individual hills stood in the rainy season, as the name suggests, all under water. a) The court Haselhorst - Niggemeier today - on the road in Rietberg Mastholte, one of the "Horst courts". b) The Court Schlepphorst is back in the direction of the Benteler lake. Descendants of Johann Heinrich (aka Juergens) MEY Generation No. 4 4. JOHANN HEINRICH4 ORTBALS (JOHANN STEPHAN3, JOHANN PHILIPP (AKA ORTBALS)2 FAHRENKAEMPER, JOHANN HEINRICH (AKA JUERGENS)1 MEY) was born 21 Mar, 1819 in Benteler, Westfalen, Germany, and died 30 Jun, 1858 in St. Louis, MO. He married ANNA MARGARET HEINRICHSMEIER 1853 in St. Margaretha RCC, Wadersloh, Westphalia, Germany. Notes for JOHANN HEINRICH ORTBALS: JOHANN HEINRICH "HENRY" ORTBALS (21 Mar 1819-30 Jun 1858) Born at Benteler, Westfalen, Germany. Married in 1853 at St. Margaretha RCC, Wadersloh, Westfalen, Germany, to ANNA MARGARETHA HEINRICHS (abt 1820-30 Jun 1858). Neither Henry nor Margaret are found in Germans to America, and the date of their emigration is unknown. Certainly, they had emigrated by 1857, for Henry is listed as a laborer, residing at 182 North 11th Street, St. Louis, in the city directory for that year. 1857 St. Louis City Directory, p. 168. Henry died at age 38 on June 30, 1858. Death Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). Margaret remarried on 17 Jan 1860 to Henry MEIBURGER, widower of Maria SANDBOTHE. Id. Henry Meiburger appeared as a driver in the St. Louis City Directories for 1866 and 1869, Edwards' Annual Director to the City of St. Louis, 1866, p. 590 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C16657) ("Heinrich Meiburg," residence 129 Buel); Edwards' Annual Director to the City of St. Louis, 1869, p. 551 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C16657) ("Heinrich Meiburg," residence 1928 Menard); and as a laborer in 1875. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1875, p. 623 (Mo. St. Archives roll R163) ("Henry Meiboerger," residence 1507 Exchange). It is not known at this time what the fate was of her two children by Henry Ortbals. They do not appear with her and Henry Meiburger in the census of 1860 or 1870. Children of JOHANN ORTBALS and ANNA HEINRICHSMEIER are: i. EDWARD5 ORTBALS, b. 17 Feb, 1857. Notes for EDWARD ORTBALS: EDWARD ORTBALS (17 Feb 1857- ?) Baptized at St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO, in 1857; his godparents were Edward Ortbals and Augusta Kampeter. Baptismal Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). The 1875 State Census of Osage County shows an Edward Ortbals with the family of Herman and "Elisabeth" Kampeter. (Mo. St. Archives, roll C 5060). The only other living Edward Ortbals at that time, son of Caspar Ortbals, appears in that census in the household of his parents. Thus, it is possible that at least one of the children of Henry Ortbals came to live with his half-sister's family in Osage County. Edward has not been found in the federal census. The Miller Co. Permanent Record of Births identifies the parents of "Katy Mary Ortbals" as "Ed Ortbals" and "Mary Bax Ortbals. While it seems most likely that the "Ed Ortbals" in question was John Edward Ortbals, son of Johann Caspar Ortbals, who was resident in Miller Co. and who had a daughter, Catherine Mary, his wife was Gertrude Spellerburg, not Mary Bax. Perhaps Edward Ortbals, son of Johann Heinrich Ortbals, also settled in Miller Co. with his cousins, and married Mary Bax. ii. MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS, b. 03 Aug, 1858. Notes for MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS: MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS (3 Aug 1858- ?) Baptized at St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO, in 1858; her godparents were Catherine Ortbals [i.e., wife of Edward] and Henry Plassmeyer. Baptismal Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO. (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). Her fate is unknown; probably, she died in infancy. 5. JOHANN EBERHARD4 ORTBALS (JOHANN STEPHAN3, JOHANN PHILIPP (AKA ORTBALS)2 FAHRENKAEMPER, JOHANN HEINRICH (AKA JUERGENS)1 MEY) was born 03 Feb, 1823 in Benteler, Westfalen, Germany, and died 14 Feb, 1869 in St. Louis, MO. He married CATHERINE NORDHOLTZ 18 Jul, 1854 in St. Louis, MO, daughter of JOHANN NORDHOLTZ and CATHERINE PIEKES. Notes for JOHANN EBERHARD ORTBALS: JOHANN EBERHARD "EDWARD" ORTBALS (3 Feb 1823-Feb 1869) Born at Benteler, Westfalen, Germany. Christened on 5 Feb 1823 at St. Margaretha RCC, Wadersloh, Westfalen, Germany. Eberhard emigrated from Westfalen, Prussia, to America, on the ship Ernestine, from Bremen to New Orleans, landing in the latter city on 8 Nov 1851. Germans to America, 2:118. His occupation is given as "farmer." Id. Eberhard was married on 18 or 22 July 1854 in St. Louis, MO, to CATHERINE NORDHOLZ (1834-14 Feb 1931), daughter of Joseph NORDHOLZ and Catherine PIEKES; the witnesses were Henry Handing and Margaret Hilke. St. Louis City Marriage Records, Book 6, p. 418; Marriage Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO, vol. 2, p. 5 (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). Catherine appears in the U.S. Census for 1860 and 1870. In the latter year, she is accompanied by Mary Ortbals, presumably her daughter, Mary Margaret. The family name is shown variously as "Ortbils" and "Ortblats." StLGS Index to 1860 Federal Census, St. Louis City & County; B.W. Steuart, St. Louis, Mo., 1870 Census Index. Eberhard appears in the 1860 federal census, his occupation given as "porter"; he also appears in the St. Louis City Directory for 1860 as a porter for McMechin & Ballantine, residing at 152 North 12th Street. Kennedy's St. Louis City Directory, 1860, p. 395 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C 16659). Eberhard also appears in the St. Louis City Directory for 1866 as a carpenter, residing at 211 North 11th Street. Edwards' Annual Director to the City of St. Louis, 1866, p. 647 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C16657). Eberhard died in February 1869, of alcoholism and pneumonia; he was buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Catherine appears in the St. Louis City Directory for 1874 as Edward's widow, doing washing at 1128 North 12th Street (rear). Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1874, p. 683 (Mo. St. Archives roll R163). The 1870 federal census shows her as a "washerwoman." By 1875, Catherine is residing at 1414 North 11th Street. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1875, p. 700 (Mo. St. Archives roll R163). Her daughter Mary is listed as a saleslady at F.J. Biermann's. Id. In 1892, Catherine resided with her sons, Henry and Frederick, at 1418 North 11th Street; daughter Mary had entered the convent by this time. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1892, p. 1167 (Mo. St. Archives roll R164). After 1914, Catherine's granddaughter, Katherine "Catty" HEITKAMP, resided in her household. Catherine is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. (Sec. 21, Lot 1126; unmarked). Information provided by Catholic Cemeteries of St. Louis, 9 Sep 1996. Children of JOHANN ORTBALS and CATHERINE NORDHOLTZ are: i. 90 Descendants of Johann Heinrich Mey, This website shows a family from the same area as Caspar Esphorst andsome of these family members came to St. Louis in 1851 and some on the same ship as Caspar Esphorst in 1853.
Generation No. St. Louis City Death Register, Jan. 1869-Sep. 1870 (Mo. State Archives, roll C10389); Death Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO (Mo. State Archives, roll MS 0071).
