The deceased, Mrs. Margareta Hesse, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Detlaf [sic] Leckband. She was born in Germany December 3, 1860. When she was 12 years old she came to this country with her parents, who made their home at Lyons, now Clinton,Iowa. Three years later she moved with her parents to Walnut, Iowa, and later to Sioux County, living near Hull, Iowa. June 24, 1884, she was united in marriage with the Rev. John Hesse, who was pastor of the Hull congregation. The wedding wassolemnized by the Rev. Zuerrer who was pastor of this congregation. This union was blessed with nine children, five sons and four daughters. Shortly after her marriage, her husband, the Rev. Hesse, accepted a call to this Trinity Lutheran congregation at Marcus. Here she lived with her family for sixteen years. In 1901 she moved with her family to Fort Dodge. Here she spent the hardest years of her life, taking care of the infants in the Lutheran Home Finding Society of Fort Dodge, herhusband being superintendent of that institution at that time. In the year 1904, the Rev. Hesse having accepted a call to the congregation at Luverne, Iowa, the family moved to that place. Ten years they lived in Luverne, coming to Aurelia in 1914. Four years later, her husband, the Rev. Hesse, having resigned from the ministry because his hearing had become impaired, the family moved back to Cole Camp, Mo., where they have lived since. [After 2 heart attacks in the previous 12 hours,she] died of heart failure December 11 at 10:30 o'clock in the morning. She reached the age of 71 years and 8 days. She leaves to mourn her departure, her grief stricken husband, the Rev. J. D. Hesse; seven children, Louise, Mrs. Arthur Look, Luverne, Iowa; Henry Hesse, Sioux City; the Rev. Gerhardt Hesse of Welsburg, Iowa; Paul Hesse, Detroit, Michigan; Agnes, Mrs. Clifford Coziah of Norfolk, Nebraska; Arnold Hesse of Seattle, Washington, who was unable to be present at the funeral;Nora, Mrs. Frank Gronbach, of Luverne, Iowa; three brothers, Theo. Leckband of Clinton, Iowa; Emil and William Leckband of Ocheyedan, Iowa, and also eighteen grandchildren, and a great number of other relatives and friends.
