BURWELL -- Robert Willard Hoppes , 87, of Burwell died on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at Valley County Hospital in Ord. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Burwell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hoppes was born on June 3, 1918, in Garfield County to Robert and Edith (Mattern) Hoppes. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Roma Hoppes ; three sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Nancy Hoppes of Fremont, R. Bradley and Kathy Hoppes of Springfield, Mo., and Brett and Lori Hoppes of Scottsbluff; a brother, Dale Hoppes of Ord; and three sisters, Lilas Rowse of Burwell, Ohleen Swanson of Grand Island and Loy Smith of Boelus. Also surviving are eight grandchildren. Willard was raised at Burwell and graduated from Burwell High School in 1936. After graduation, he worked at different jobs in Burwell. He spent two years in California working as an office clerk. Willard was married to Roma Jorgensen on April 10, 1942, at Bartlett. Four sons were born to this union, Dalee, who passed away on July 2, 1955, of leukemia at age 11; Brian; Bradley; and Brett. The couple farmed at Ord for three years. They moved to Burwell, where Willard worked for Bolli Oil for three years. In 1950, Willard started to carry mail. He carried mail for 35 years and continued his contract for another 10 years. Willard retired in 1984. Willard served on the Burwell Board of Education for four years. He became a member of the Burwell United Methodist Church in 1955 and taught junior high Sunday school and also adult Sunday school. Willard was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing and liked all sports, especially Nebraska football. Willard was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dalee; and a sister, Ilva Schuyler. Memorials may be given to the Burwell United Methodist Church or the Burwell Rescue Unit. The Grand Island Independent, [Grand Island, NE], December 31, 2005
