Joel Hoppes was a veteran of the Civil War, having volunteered for nine months. He entered the Army 2 March 1863 at Falls City, Nebraska Territory. He was a member of Company L, 2nd Regiment, Nebraska Cavalry. He died of wounds received in action while scouting 18 September, 1863, near Pierre, Dakota Territory. On September 3rd, 1863, Gen. Sully's troops attacked and defeated a band of Sioux Indians at Whitestone Hill in North Dakota. After the battle, most of the men were sent downstream to garrison Fort Randall near the South Dakota/Nebraska border. The remaining troops constructed Old Fort Sully east of Pierre using cottonwood logs. After Joel's death, his widow and children returned to Indiana. Charles Jenkins, husband of Susan Annie Hoppes (Joel's niece) also served in the 2nd Cavalry.
