This community was called upon to mourn the loss of one of its oldest and most highly-respected citizens, Mr. John Brown, last Saturday morning between 11 and 12 o'clock. The funeral occurred from the family residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Revs. Caldwell and Brockett officiated. Mr. Brown was born in Pennsylvania June 30, 1811. When he was quite young his family moved to Ohio, where they resided until 1828, when they removed to Vermilion County, Ill. In 1838, Mr. Brown came this County, living in Lancaster Township and afterwards in Rock Run Township, being engaged in farming. In 1867 he moved to his late residence in town, and in company with Col. Dornblaser he built the first grain warehouse in Dakota and was for a number of years engaged in the grain and stock business. During the Black Hawk War he was a soldier in Capt. James Palmer's company, Col. Moore's regiment. He had been supervisor of his township and had held various school and township offices. For 50 years he had been one of the leading members of the M. E. Church and assisted in the first house of worship in this part of the country. He was married in 1833 to Miss Mary Hickman, a native of Ohio, who with ten children survive him. They are Clark, Sarah, Mary, Mrs. F. B. Walker, John, Mrs. Harry Milliken of Chicago, James and Vincent, of Spencer, Iowa, Allen and Mrs. F. Mack, also of Spencer. They were all home to the funeral." FREEPORT (III.) DAILY BULLETIN,
