Lieblings Kapelknabe des Kurfürsten Moritz, 1550-55 als bevorzugter Schüler Melanchthons Student zu Wittenberg, 1559 Magister, Pfarrer zu Schulpforta und Leipzig(St.Thoma), 1570 Prinzen-Eerzieher zu Weimar, 1575 Professor der Theologie, 1577 Rektor zu Jena, 1588Superintendent zu Meißen, wo das Volk sang: "Der Superntend von Meißen ist ein Calvinist und schlechter Christ", nach dem Sturz der Kryptokalvinisten und der Einkerkerung seines Schwagers, des Dresdener Oberhofprediger Salmuth, 1592 abgeseßt, 1597 durch Fürspruch seines SchülersFriedrich Wilhelm, Herzog von Sachsen-Weimar, wieder mit einer Leipziger Professur betraut.
