Geschichte: https://www.ancestry.de/mediaui-viewer/tree/1464319/person/-1938020639/ Peter's father died when he was 5 years old. At 10 he came to the US with his mother and siblings. They settled on a farm near Acley, Iowa. In his adolescence he moved to Oregon where he lived about 7 years, and finally he settled near Lennox, South Dakota where he married TaDena (Dena) Bleeker in 1888. He conceived 9 children (all boys), of which 2 died during infancy. Peter died at the age of 80. A letter that Peter Swyter wrote to his children Ranco and Grace 1935: - source Lois Huber Rapid City March 28, 1935 Dear children: - I will try and answer your letter. dated Feb. 14 -35. I do not feel like doing anything, I had a bad cold, with nervous indigestion, all winter. And have not been outside for a long time. But anybody that went through, what I went through, does not think much of death and dying. All of us will sooner or later be put in the balance, and if we have not the blood of Christ in our favor, we will be found wanting. Rapid City is going to have a big time this summer they are going to spend $40,000 to improve the fair-ground right north of the home here. There are to be 2 races 1 in June and 1 in September then they are talking of a Government mail route by air. They will have what they call the Pageant of America an outside theater. And the Strato Balloon flight. So I expect there will be plenty of excitement, and bring many people out in this part of the woods. But the signs for a favorable season are no good and special the farmers, are up again it. No seed and no feed and no prospect whatever, and the farm is the foundation of all other industry. The building we live in is about 72 X 36 there is a basement and 2 storeys high, on the east end of the basement is the laundry room. And on the west end are the toilet rooms and a hall reaching from end to end with bed-rooms on both sides. The first floor is occupied by the management, dining-room, and visiting room. The second floor has a reading room on the east end and toilet rooms on the west end and a hall reaching from end to end, with bedrooms on both sides. The bedrooms are 12 X 16 with 3 single beds in each room. There are 27 inmates here, now and every bed is occupied. The place is steam heated. And has electric light. The rules of the Institution are as follows. We have to take a bath, and shave once a week. And take our beds out airing every week. Make our own beds, and sweep and mop our rooms. There is a shower bath and a bath-tub in each toilet room. With cold and hot water all the time. Now I don't know whether you like to read all this dope. But a fallow has to say something to keep up the conversation. Right south of us hear, across Rapid creek there is a fire that never goes out, where they burn all the waste that comes from Rapid City. I just talked to a man, he lost over $4000 in the Rapid City Banks, and now he is here to stay until they carry him out to the Potter's Field. such is life and then some. But smile in spite of misery. It wont make things no worse, for smiling is a blessing..that softens up the curse. Well I thank you for the Photograph of little Lois, on the one where she is alone she looks like a little Queen looking at this world for the first time,, And my prayer is that God may gard, and protect her. The weather here is still dry, to dry to grow anything. I think I will have to come to a close. For it's no use to mention troubles. For each mortal has his own. And what others bear in union. With God I bear alone This world is long on sympathy. But rather short on aid. And life is like a summers day, where sunbeams chase the shade. Some moments bright as crystal. And others dull as lead. Sometimes content and happy, And sometimes doleful sad. But there is a time in living. That lends to life a charm. Rest on my Savior's bosom . .Or lean up on his arm. Then though I never realize, The power of his might His hand will safely guide me. Through tempest and through night I hope that these lines will find you in good health and happy. With kind regards, your Father, P. W. Swyter.

Title Tammena
Description

1749 in Visquard.
