Schaaf, 65, of Fall Creek died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at home surrounded by family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 28, 1943, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Thomas and Mary (Martin) Kadlec. Pat married James K. Schaaf on Oct. 18, 1961, in Iowa City, Iowa. Jim and Pat moved to Eau Claire in 1967, and then moved to Fall Creek in 1974, where they raised their three children. Pat worked for Luther Midelfort in Eau Claire for 31 years before she retired in April 2008. Prior to that, she worked for National Presto in Eau Claire. Pat is survived by her three children, Katherine (Darin) Lewman of Grants Pass, Ore., Johnny (Stephanie) Schaaf of Eau Claire and Deb Schaaf of Altoona. She is also survived by her brothers, Thomas (Lorna) Kadlec of Newport, Minn., and Bob (Sherie) Schaaf of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as her sister, Carol Barger of Eau Claire; her grandchildren, Jason (Becky Johnson) Strasburg, Joshua (Amanda) Strasburg, Jennifer Strasburg, Ben Schaaf, Sam Schaaf, Amanda Schaaf and "her boys," the Altoona Wildcats (Sam Brenizer, Mike Byrns, Jake Eckardt, Nic Johnson, Brady Kaiser, Philip Mazzei, Forrest Mazzei, Tyler Nelson, Steve Postl and Sam Schaaf). She is preceded in death by her infant son, James K. Schaaf Jr.; her husband; and her parents. Pat's greatest pleasure was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards, reading books, watching movies, knitting and crocheting blankets, visiting with friends and donating money to a variety of casinos. Pat was well-known for her kindness, generosity and her "never-give-up" attitude. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Daniel Burns and the oncology staff at Luther Hospital, as well as the excellent hospice staff at Northwest HomeCare. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Stokes, Prock and Mundt Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Highway 12 in Altoona, to pay their respects.
