Aus Find A Grave: MoMM2 Robert Von Staden VVETERAN GEBURT 9 Feb 1924 San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA TOD 15 Juli 1944 (im Alter von 20) At Sea DENKMAL Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines GRABSTELLE Tablets of the Missing - United States Navy--Missing In Action GEDENKSTÄTTEN-ID 56758227 MTB Squadron 7(VMTB-7) Muster logs record Robert Von Staden as missing in action on 15 July 1944. War Diaries for Squadron 7 record PT's 128 and 130 engaged barges 14 miles west of Radoin Island (Papua, New Guinea). The barges were underway headed east. A starboard run was made with fire from both boats very accurate. 1 barge was seen to sink, another set afire and left in sinking condition. While on the way out an attempt to pick up prisoners on PT was hit by 40mm or 75 mm shell in dayroom causing gasoline fire. The boat was immediately abandoned. All hands except one were saved. The PT was destroyed by friend three explosions. Two men on PT 128 wounded and hull was holed in 4 places. At 0115 survivors from 133 boat were picked up by PT's 142 and 143 and put aboard DD Ammen. The fate of Robert Von Staden is unknown, the diary list only one loss on the action of 15 July but Navy muster records record the loss of GM3 Muse, Clyde Johnson and MOMM2 Williams, Robert E in addition to Von Staden. Alternate records record Von Staden and Williams lost on 13 July (see below). The diary of VMTB-7 for 13 July contains no record of losses by either PT 133 or 128.
