Harrisonburg Daily News Record Saturday Dec. 26, 1964: BROADWAY — Mattie Lee Donson, 74, of Broadway, died of a heart attack at her home Thursday. Mrs. Donson was born May 21, 1890 and was the daughter of Harvey and Laura West Zirkle. She was a member of Broadway Methodist Church and was one of Broadway's earliest post-mistresses and held the position for nine years. She also was a telephone operator for 7 years. Surviving are her husband, Bernis B. Donson, whom she married in 1915. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Billy M. Hulvey of Broadway; a son, James B. Donson of Broadway, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Broadway Methodist Church by the Rev. Howard C. Smith and the Rev. Linwood Daniel. Burial will be Linville Creek Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gerald Caplinger, Marshall and Marion Hulvey, Wesley Poland, Eugene Long and Rufis Cline. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Rhodes Funeral Home in Broadway. The body will be taken to the church an hour before the funeral. The family has asked that flowers be omitted.
