Notes for this person
The USAT Dorchester was torpedoed at 12:55 a.m. on 3 February 1943 by the German submarine U-223 in the North Atlantic off Greenland. More than two-thirds of the 900 military and civilian personnel aboard perished. This is the ship made famous by the Four Chaplains who gave up their life jackets so others could be saved.
