Hello Ralf, I saw your of 2/02/00 on GenForum, here is what I

have on the Ditzler family. This is from a book put out by a

Ditzler relative. JOHN HENRY DITZLER John Henry Ditzler was

born about 1803 in Marpingen (Saarland) Prussia. He was married

to Margaretha Kreutz, also of Marpingen. Five children were born

to this union: 1. Nicolaus Ditzler I b. 21 February 1825 d.

10 June 1888 2. Peter Ditzler 3. Margaretha Ditzler 4. son 5.

son During the time he lived, the Saar region was part of the

French Republic, annexed in 1799. It remained under French

control until 1815 and the defeat of Napoleon. The area was

then given to the Kingdom of Prussia and was known as the

Prussian Rhineland until the unification of Germany in 1871.

John Henry Ditzler froze to death in the Black Forest in 1839.

It is not known if his body was ever found. It is presumed that

if his body was recovered, that he is buried in Marpingen. His

widow remarried and then died in 1841. According to Ed Ditzler,

Nicolaus Ditzler's passport stated his birthplace was Marpingen.

The administrative capital of the region is Saarbrücken. An

attempt to locate records there will be made at some time in the

future. The Ditzler family were of the Roman Catholic faith and

church records Mai also be available to verify what has been

handed down through the generations. NICOLAUS DITZLER I In

1841, after the death of their mother, Nicolaus and his brother

Peter Ditzler moved to France (possibly alsace-Lorraine) to live

with an uncle. They then emigrated in 1844. It is probable

that Nicolaus and Peter left from the French port of Le Havre,

as many Germans found it easier to leave from France than

Germany. Their passenger ship was to go to New York City. The

ship either drifted off course or due to bad weather, diverted

to New Orleans. The brothers disembarked there and stayed for a

few months. Peter Ditzler went to Cleveland, Ohio and is said to

have founded the Ditzler Paint Company. He married a woman

named Mary. It is not known if they had children. Ditzler

Paint Company is now a brand name of PPG Industries of

Pittsburgh, PA. No further information is available regarding

Peter or the Ditzlers who remained in Germany. Bertha Ditzler

Garner, Lucille Ditzler Wagner, Fred Ditzler and Ed Ditzler all

remember that Nicolaus Ditzler's children would receive letters

from Germany, so thee was some effort to maintain contact with

the relatives in Europe. Nicolaus Ditzler I (John Henry and

Margaretha, nee Kruetz) b. Marpingen, Saarland Prussia, 21

February 1825. d. Ora Township, Jackson County, Illinois USA 10

June 1888. Married St. Clair County, Illinois, 16 September

1850 to Anna Margaretha Schaeffer. Both are buried in the

Ditzler Family Cemetery, Ava, Illinois. Children: Henry, Adam,

Catherine, Elizabeth, Louis, Peter, George, Margaret, Leonard,

and Anna. I find your site very interesting, I have yet to

compare any dates, the names seem to be the same. Do you really

think this is the same family? I know very little about this

era, and this generation of Ditzlers. My grandmother was the

daughter of Nicolaus' son Henry and his second wife Julia
