Featuring the event was a big surprise plannedand perpetrated upon Mr. Slagle, who had known nothing of the scheduledgathering and was met by the happy countenances of his children,grandchildren and great-grandchildren as he returned to his home about12:30 o'clock from attending church in the city. The surprise was a mostpleasant one to the aged resident and members of the family say they hadnot seen him in such happy sprits for some time. The children of Christian Slagle with their children and grandchildrengathered at the Slagle home about 11 o'clock and were comfortably seatedwhere presence would not discovered by Mr. Slagle until he reached thehouse. Once there, Mr. Slagle was given a most cordial reception and hein turn made the members of the party feel that they were welcome. Bythis time everybody's appetite had sharpened considerably and the firstitem on the day's program was a big feast on the lawn in front of thehouse. This feast was prepared by the cooks who themselves have right bigappetites on reunion day and who knew the bounds of the celebrators, andby the time the last "course" had been served a goodly potion of theafternoon had passed. The remainder of the day was spent in a generalsocial way. Christian Slagle was born in Prussia, Germany, Nov. 15, 1837, and at theage of 9 years came to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Augustine (Augustus) Slagle. The family located in Johnstown on Vine Street and hassince been one of the representative families of the community. ChristianSlagle's father was a mason by trade and built the foundations forhundreds of homes in this city. He and his wife died shortly after theflood. Their remains are buried in Sandyvale Cemetery. In the Augustine(Augustus) Slagle family were five children - three sons and twodaughters and all of these are still living. Christian, as stated,resides near Island Park, Fred, lives in Dale, David Sr. in Lower YoderTownship, Mrs. Jacob Mishler lives in Morrellville and Mrs. OliverLivingstone at Benscreek. Christian Slagle began life as a farmer and although he followed themason's trade at times, he spent practically his entire life as a farmer.During his younger days he worked on the farm in the summer, at masonaryin the spring, and during the winters at the old Millcreek furnace. Married in 1858 In 1858 Christian Slagle and Miss Marta Howard were united in marriage atSomerset and the same year they located on a farm near that town. Afterthree years they moved to Westmoreland County, but remained there onlyabout a year, when they returned to Somerset County and purchased a smallfarm in Jenner Township. Later they secured a larger farm in QuemahoningTownship. Some years later they came to Cambria County, but were onlyhere a short period of time when they returned to Somerset County.Shortly after the flood they located in Ferndale, where they resideduntil two years ago, when Mr. Slagle and his second wife moved to theirpresent home. His first wife died in Ferndale about 14 years ago, andabout two years ago he married Catherine Barron. Eleven of his children born to Mr. Slagle and his first wife are living,as follows: David of Morrellville, Ephrain of Krings, Mrs. W.E. Rodgersof Hooversville, Harry of Moxham, William of Brooklyn, Albert A. ofFerndale, Robert W. of Ferndale, Mrs. Harvey Crissey of Kernville, Mrs.Newton Lohr of Washington, D.C., John of Hagerstown, M., and Noah ofBensreek. The last three were unable to be present at yesterday'sreunion. Six great-grandchildren of the venerable Mr. Slagle were amongthose present. Christian Slagle has been enjoying the best of health for one of hisyears. Two years ago he did nearly all the work in the construction ofhis handsome stone residence where yesterday's reunion was held. The children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren of the venerableChristian Slagle, of the Valley Pike, gathered at his home near IslandPark last Sunday, and enjoyed a pleasant day. It was the first reunion ofthe Slagle clan. Christian Slagle was at church in this city in themorning and when he returned home he was surprised to see the gathering.The party began coming at 11 o'clock and were comfortably seated wherethey could not be discovered until the venerable man reached his home. On the large lawn in front of his comfortable stone house a big dinnerwas served. The remainder of the day was spent in social confab by theolder members of the party, while games were played by the youngsters. Christian Slagle was born on November 15, 1837 in Prussia, and when nineyears of age came to America with his parents Mr. and Mrs. AugustineSlagle. The family located on Vine Street, Johnstown. He was one of fivechildren, three sons and two daughters all of whom are still living. Mr. Slagle was twice married, his wife dying fourteen years ago inFerndale. Library ************************************************************* 10 Feb 1927 Johnstown Tribune-Democrat obituary reads; Christ Slagle, 90, Dies of Paralysis, Deceased was born in Germany in 1837, resided in this locality for 81years. Christian Slagle, one of oldest residents of this vicinity, died ofparalysis at noon today, at his home near Benscreek, Upper Yoder Twp. inhis 90th year. He was born in Germany in 1837 and was 9 years old whenhis parents, Augustus and Christina Slagle came to America and settled inthis vicinity. For a number of years, the Slagle family resided on thepoint, before going to Hooversville, Somerset County. Where they madetheir home for a long time. Christian Slagle was engaged as a farmer inSomerset and Cambria Counties for a long time before he retired some timeago. The deceased was a brother of Mrs. Jacob Mishler, of Morrelvilleand Mrs. Oliver Livingston, of Benscreek. He was married three times,his third wife surviving him. In addition to his sisters and widow, Mr.Slagle is survived by 10 children, 31 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
