Schaum had been laying flooring in elevator #26 on the fourth floor which had been stopped as a measure for safety. He stepped to a small platform in the shaft to carry his wood work a little further. By doing so he got under the weights of elevator # 26 & 27. He had not informed the man who was running elevator # 27 of his intention it was said, and even when it passed him on its way up to the higher floors he said nothing about it. The descending weights crushed down on him. Schaum was 36 yrs old, married and lived at 214 Clermont ave.
