Notizen zu dieser Person
According to his draft card and military records, George was born on November 21, 1895, which differs from the birth date listed in family documents, as well as the one listed in the Social Security Death Index of November 25, 1895. Either date could be correct. George is well remembered as an accomplished artist. He is the artist of a large drawing of Potthast Brothers Furniture Company (702 N. Howard Street), which is currently owned by the Maryland Historical Society. At the end of World War I, George Potthast was stationed at Meuse-Argonne in France; he was a private first class (according to Maryland in the World War, 1917-1919). In a letter to George's children written in 1997, Ted Potthast, Jr. writes: "I remember him showing me a series of water color paintings which he had made while he was in France, waiting for a boat to bring him home after World War I. They were harbor scenes, and I think he said they were in the port of Le Havre. This was right after your mother died (1976) and I visited George on Dutton Avenue." In April 1923, George and his cousin William (son of Johann) traveled to New York City; both sent postcards to their uncle Theodore, copies of which are in this author's possession. George's work as an artist was apparently an avocation; he earned his living at Potthast Brothers. According to the 1930 US Census, George was working at Potthast Brothers as a supervisor; at that time he lived at 1500 Westgate Road in Baltimore, MD.
