Johann's birth and christening records were found in the LDS Family Search database; his birth and death dates were confirmed by the Social Security Death Index; his death date is also confirmed by the memorial card from his wake. Holy Redeemer Cemetery incorrectly records his birth as 1871. Johann was born in Borgholz where he received a solid and comprehensive training as a cabinetmaker in his father's workshop. The Society for the History of Germans in America records that he arrived in America, in Baltimore, in 1892; this is an error. There are two reliable sources that detail his immigration in 1894. The first is the Ellis Island Records, which document his arrival at Ellis Island on November 28, 1894, arriving on the SS Stuttgart from Bremen. The second document is the Ship Manifest of Alien Immigrants -- for the same ship -- arriving in the Port of Baltimore on November 30, 1894. Apparently, he arrived in New York, was processed through Ellis Island, then sailed for two additional days to Baltimore, arriving there on November 30th -- his birthday! John was the third of the Potthast brothers to arrive in America, following Vincent (1891) and William (1892). He arrived with $24 in his pocket, and listed his occupation as "joiner." He was 24 years old on the day he arrived in Baltimore, and single. Johann's date of naturalization in 1902 is confirmed by Baltimore City Court Records. He went back to Germany in August/September 1912, and when he returned to America (again through Ellis Island), he listed his name as John and his residence as Baltimore, MD. Following the lead of his brothers, Johann probably changed his name to John soon after arriving in America. He joined his brothers William and Vincent (and eventually Theodore) in founding the well-known furniture establishment to which he devoted a lifetime of effort and craftsmanship. Many German-American organizations, notably the German Society, benefited from his activities. John's wife, Margaretta, died in 1916 at a young age; she was just shy of her 43rd birthday. The death must have been hard on John because four years later, according to the 1920 US Census, John was living with his brother, Theodore, at 2306 W. Fayette Street in Baltimore. John's son William was also part of Theodore's household. His three daughters, Maria, Elizabeth and Theresa, were living in St. Anthony's Orphan Asylum. The whereabouts of John's son Theodore in 1920 (he would have been 15 at the time) is unknown. By the time of the 1930 US Census, John and his children had reunited and moved into their own home at 52 Bentalou Street. John was then Vice President of Potthast Brothers and two of his sons, William and Theodore were managers there; Theodore continued there until the business closed in 1975. One of John's daughters, Elizabeth, listed her occupation in 1930 as a bookkeeper in a factory (possibly Potthast Brothers as well).
