William's birth date and death date are confirmed by the Social Security Death Index. In April 1923, William and his cousin George (son of Wilhelm) traveled to New York City; both sent postcards to their uncle Theodore, copies of which are in this author's possession. His obituary appeared in The Baltimore Sun, September 25, 1971: "Potthast. On September 24, 1971, William A. beloved son of the late John A. and Margaret Potthast (nee Leib), and devoted brother of Theodore J. Potthast, Mrs. Marie A. Griffin, Miss Elizabeth Potthast and Mrs. Teresa M. Hirsch. Also survived by five nephews. "Prayers at the Weber Funeral Home, 5311 Edmondson avenue, on Monday at 6:15 A.M. Mass of Requiem in St. William of York Church at 10 A.M. Interment in Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M."
