Notizen zu dieser Person

Ted Potthast, Jr. indicates that Lena was born "just up the Weser River" from the Potthasts. However, all other information indicates that Lena's parents and grandparents were from Borgholz. Long after the death of Vincent Potthast (Lena Rehrmann's first husband) in 1911 AND shortly after the death of Anna Leib in 1923 (Wilhelm Potthast's first wife), Lena married Wilhelm (William) Potthast ... essentially a marriage between a brother-in-law and sister-in-law. The Rehrmanns were a prominent Westphalian family, and were connected not only with the Potthasts and Leibs, but also with numerous other Borgholzian families. See Rehrmann Ancestral information for more details. In the US Census of 1920, Lena is recorded as a widow, age 53, born in Germany (as were her parents). Four of her children were still living with her: Agnes, age 19, working for C&P Telephone Company; Margaret, age 17, also working for C&P; Joseph, age 13; and Charles, age 10. Of her three other children, Mary Amelia died in 1913; Caroline "Lena" married in 1918 and was presumably living with her husband; and John Joseph "Janny" was arrested in 1919 and by 1920 was serving time in Leavenworth prison. There are conflicting reports re: when Lena emigrated to America: one source indicates 1883 while another indicates 1887. Whichever date is correct, the fact remains that Lena apparently arrived in America before either of her husbands.
