ELKHART - James E. Stringfellow, 75, of Elkhart, died Saturday, Aug. 29, surrounded by his family at Elkhart General Hospital after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born April 4, 1940, in Gary, to the late Margaretha (Borneman) and Carlton Stringfellow. He married Judith Blackburn, his high school and college sweetheart, in Huntington, on Aug. 17, 1963. She survives. Also surviving are children Sarah Kilway of Zionsville, Katherine (James) Burkert of Elkhart and J. Benjamin Stringfellow of Chicago. Beloved grandchildren are Elizabeth Kilway and Thomas, Margaret and Adam Burkert. His brother, Carlton (JoEllen) Stringfellow of Centerville, Md., also survives. His sister, Jane McGinn, preceded him in death. James attended Huntington High School and DePauw University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and the Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. James began employment at St. Joseph Valley Bank and retired 39 years later from Chase Bank, having served in several executive positions. He taught Principles of Banking to many Elkhart area students over the years. He was formerly a member of the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Greater Personnel Association of Elkhart, the board of the Red Cross of Elkhart, SCORE Association and Christiana Creek and Elcona country clubs. He was an active volunteer in the Concord Community School System, as well as a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, having served on its vestry. James will best be remembered as a true gentleman - with a zest for life, devotion to his family and friends and an infectious and entertaining sense of humor. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A memorial service will take place at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Elkhart County Humane Society, 54687 C.R. 19, Bristol, IN 46507. Elkhart Truth
