Sir John Howard knight was constituted in the ninth year of King Edward III admiral and captain of the king's navy in the North and in the following year had an assignation of 1537 for the wages of himself with his men at arms in that service. And that same year having affairs to transact beyond the seas the king granted him his protection dated April 24, 1337 to be in force till the August 1, 1337. Sir John was sheriff of Norfolk in 1345. He married before October 11, 1338 Alice de Bois, daughter of Robert de Bois, Knt., of Fersfield and Garboldisham, Norfolk, and Brokes (in Ipswich), Suffolk, by Christian, daughter of William le Latimer, Knt. They had two sons, Robert, Knight., and John, and one daughter, Anne (wife of Robert Pashley, Knight.). Alice was heiress in 1333 to her brother, Robert de Bois, Knt. Sir John Howard was living November 1347, when he was granted license for a weekly market and yearly fair at Wiggenhall, Norfolk. His widow, Alice, died September 6, 1372.
