Sir Robert Howard BIRTH 1336 Norfolk, England DEATH 18 Jul 1388 (aged 52-53) East Winch, Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough, Norfolk, England BURIAL All Saints Churchyard East Winch, Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough, Norfolk, England PLOT Howard Chapel MEMORIAL ID 65631865 Baron Howard, Knight of East Winch, Fersfield, Terrington and Wiggenhall, Norfolk. Son and heir to Sir John Howard and Alice de Bois, daughter of Sir Robert. A direct descendant of Henry II of England, Charlemagne, William I of England, Alfred the Great, Hugh Capet and Rurik, Sir Robert was born about 1336. Husband of Margaret de Scales, the daughter of Sir Robert de Scales and Katherine de Ufford. They had one son and one daughter: Sir John and Margaret, wife of Constantine de Clifton. Sir Robert was imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1378 to 1379 for keeping Margaret de Nerford from her grandmother, Lady Alice de Neville. Charged in 1378 with the abduction of Margery Narford, grandaughter and heir to Alice, Lady Neville. Such was the serious nature of the offense that Howard was not only sent to the Tower but also bound under substantial recognizances to do no harm to Lady Neville and his captor, Sir John Le Strange; furthermore, his case was brought to the attention of Parliament. But such animosity as possibly remained between Strange and Howard did not, in the following year, prevent Richard, Earl of Arundel, from having both men act as witnesses to one of his transactions. Sir Robert died at his estate at East Winch, Norfolk, 18 July 1388. Margaret married again Sir Walter de Bermingham of Ireland who died before 10 Feb 1401. Margaret left a will dated 08 May 1416, and was buried with her first husband in the south side of the chancel at East Winch, Norfolk.
