Obituary in the Everett, Washington Herald, April 23, 2004: Gustaf Schalo, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home onApril 20, 2004. Gus was preceded in death in 2001 by his wife of 60 years, Mary. He is survived by five children and their families, Judy and KenTeague, Rich and Annette Schalo, John and Pam Schalo, all of Sultan,and Kathy and Don Ewert, Pam Ewert and Bob Green, all of CamanoIsland; 14 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; nieces, nephewsand friends. Gus was born August 6, 1910 in Turtle Lake, ND. His family moved toStartup in 1925 and later that year moved to the Sultan Basin Roadwhere he lived the rest of his life. Gus began working in loggingcamps at age 17, repairing the railroads for logging. In 1935 he beganworking with the Civil Conservation Corp (CCC) and worked untilOctober 15, 1936. During this time he received his carpentry trainingwhich he later used to build his own family home, and assisted othersin remodeling and in building projects. He also maintained seven acresof raspberries and a small farm, and worked in various logging campsand mills thereafter. In 1962 he went to work at the Sultan Lumber andHardware and worked there until he retired in 1975. Gus enjoyed propagating new plants, and supplied the family andneighbors with plant starts of trees and flowers. Gus was a creativeand talented wood carver and had a large collection of carved animalsthat he gave away to his grandchildren. He had a special way ofrelating to people through his sense of humor, twinkle in his eye, andthe friendly way he made people feel at ease. He was a lifelong member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, formerly StartupBaptist Church, serving in various capacities. On Friday, April 23rd at 1:00pm a graveside service will be held atSultan Cemetery with a memorial service following at 2:00pm atHillcrest Baptist Church, 14030 Sultan Basin Road, Sultan. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church.
