" Christian came over first. The story was that his wife (our grandmother) had to almost push him on the boat as he did not want to leave Germany. She had a little money left from her family. He had squandered the rest. So, she decided to come here and start a new life with her family. As I said, he came first and found a large farm in Essex Center and then sent for the rest of the family.

Your father's father was an orphan. His mother died when he was a baby and I don't know what happened to his father. He was brought up by an uncle who was very strict and as they say 'mean' to him, so he ran away and joined the German Calvary called the Uhlans, a crack regiment. I still have his epaulets. None of his children could get along with him. Mama (Sophie) managed somehow as he lived with us six year. He had a terrible disposition. Your father's mother (Luise) was entirely different - patient and easy going - worked herself to death doing outside work on the farm.

Christian lived later years in Jericho, Vermont with relatives until 1928 when he decided to return to his old hometown, Sindelfingen where he died rather suddenly in December 1928.

The farm burned to the ground around 1925 - some years after they left. It was a beautiful white colonial house with green shutters. I can still see it after all those years. Occasionally I drive over that way and look at the meadow where the house stood." - letter from Clara Stricker - daughter of Sophie Schaefer Stricker.
.......
"Luise and Christian had a total of 13 children but 5 died in early childhood or infancy from that dread childhood disease at that time - Diptheria." - taken from a letter written by Clara Stricker - chilld of Sophie Schaefer Stricker
