Young Bennett was an herb doctor and held in high esteem by hisneighbors. They reffed to him as Doc Bennettand as Mr. Bennett. In 1858 Young Bennett, Newton Bennett, George Palmer, and LeviCaldwell were the trustees for the methodist church in Big Cataloochee. These men seemed to have been the leaders of the community at that time.Young served several years as Justice of the Peace, and at one time wasPostmaster, the post office being at his house. Six of Young's sons fought in the Civil War. Three did not return. In 1858 before the war started, Levi Caldwell had built his secondhouse which was probably about the time that Young built his secondhouse. He built near the intersection fo the road to Mt. Sterling (Hwy284) and the Cataloochee Turnpike. He was one of the stockholders of theTurnpike. It was unfortunate the the road was built before the war.General Kirk's first stop was at Young's house. They burned it to theground. After that Young had to declare bankruptcy in 1870.
