Steve knew there were wolves above his house on the mountain. He hadheard the mother whipping her whelps (pups) because she was weaning them. That meant they were getting big and strong. It would not be long beforethe whole pack of wolves would raid and kill the livestock. The news came of the bounty on wolves, just in time. The nextmorning he set out to hunt them. Altogether he sent nine scalps toRaleigh and soon received a check for $90.00. He took the check to the Loves in Waynesville, who were owners ofthe land at that time. He told them he wanted to buy land in BigCataloochee. He told them he wanted certian boundaries including part ofSpruce Mountian, Woody Creek, and some on Sugar Creek, about one hudredseventy acres. Most of the Valley had been settled. He bought at the veryupper end. They sold it to him for fifty cents an acre. when the parkbought it, they surveyed it and made him an offer. Steve did not like the offer. He and a few others sued to get abetter price, and did receive a little better than had been offered. OnJuly 18, 1931, Steve received $11,655.00 for 151 acres. It cost him$1000.00 for lawyers and court cost.
