The Upson Family in America Volume two of Kulp's Families of Wyoming Valley gives the story of thekilling of Asa Upson by Indians at his sugar bush. They poured boilingmaple-syrup down his throat. However, it is now known that many suchstories are not authentic. Stewart-Pearce's Annals of Luzerne County, p.144, gives the following account: "On March 28, 1780, Asa Upson and JonahRogers were making sugar a short distance above the mouth of Hunlock'sCreek, when a party of ten Indians rushed down from the mountain, killedand scalped Upson and took Rogers prisoner." In the History of Hanover by H. B. Plume, page 116, is this: "In 1780constant reports of murders committed and prisoners carried away by theIndians came in. A band shot Asa Upson in Hanover where the bridgecrosses the canal below Careytown, where Jamieson was killed in 1778." Inthe History of Wyoming by Charles Miner, page 487, in a list of personsmurdered by savages in Westmoreland, other than those who fell in battleis: "1780, March 27th, Asa Upson, Hanover." In Poetry and History ofWyoming by Mr. L. Stone, page 228, is an extract from the diary of Lieut.Jenkins: "March 27, 1780, Upson killed and scalped near William Stewart'shouse." The most impressive and convincing proof was recently found in theConnecticut Courant of April 25th, 1780. The complete files are in theConnecticut Historical Society Library in Hartford. "Poughkeepsie, N.Y., April 17, 1780. We hear from Wyoming that a party of about thirty Indians lately attackedthat place, killed Asa Upton, and three other men, and carried off twohorses, several women and children, a boy about 14 years, and twomen--Bennett and Hammond."
