Sarah Stephens (Uriah, Uriah, Thomas, Henry), was the eldest daughter ofUriah and Martha (Rathbone) Stephens. She married, first, Asa Upson. Theylived in the Wyoming Valley, where Mr. Upson was killed by the Indians inhis sugar bush, 27 March 1780. Mrs. Sara (Stephens) Upson, next, about1781 married Solomon Bennett, and with him removed to Canisteo, New York,with the first settlers, in 1790. He purchased there, a large tract ofland upon which they resided. *The above information was obtained from the "Stephens/Stevens Genealogy"by Plowdon Stevens (1909). The Upson Family in America ASA OF WYOMING VALLEY Asa1 Upson of Wyoming Valley. Died March 27, 1780, Hanover, WestmorelandCounty, then Connecticut, now Pennsylvania. Married about 1773, in that township,Sarah, daughter of Uriah and Martha (Rathbone) Stephens, Jr. She bornabout 1756, Stonington. Died Canisteo, N. Y. She married (2) about 1782,Solomon Bennett. Asa Upson, the ancestor of many interested Upson Family Associationmembers, first comes into prominence as a settler of the Wyoming Valley.As early as June 1772, his name appears on a list in volume 2, pages 736and 752, of the History of Wilkesbarre and Wyoming Valley. There is alsoa record of land assigned to Asa Upson in the township of Hanover, one ofthe "settling towns" in Wyoming Valley. Forty of the settlers were giventheir choice of lands, the rest of the land being divided among theremaining two hundred settlers. There is a family tradition that Widow Sarah Stephens Upson and herchildren left the Wyoming Valley at once, but the following referencesgiven show otherwise: Landmarks of Steuben Co., N.Y., by Hon. HarlowHakes, page 118--"In the early part of the year 1789, Solomon Bennett,Capt. John Jamison, Benjamin Crosby, Uriah Stevens, and possibly ElishaBrown left the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania and proceeded by way of theSusquehanna and Chemung Rivers to visit the Phelps and Gorham purchase, .. . . decided to purchase and establish a settlement (Canisteo Valley)."Page 74--"These pioneers (Uriah Stevens, Sr. and Benjamin Crosby withfamilies) passed winter of 1789 in the town (Canisteo), and in the springof 1790 were joined by Solomon Bennett, Uriah Stephens, Jr., Col. JohnStephens and their families." Note: This reference is followed by adetailed account of Sol. Bennet's activities. The settlement of Canisteotownship included the present city of Hornell which was known as UpperCanisteo and the present Canisteo was called Bennettsville. History of Steuben Co., N. Y., by Prof. W. W. Clayton, 1879, page217--"In the spring of 1790, Solomon Bennett, Uriah Stephens, Jr. andCol. John Stephens with their families joined the new settlement." Kanestio Valley, by Wm. M. Stuart, 1929, page 36, Chapter X--The BennettFamily--page 37--"Solomon Bennett was one of the most prominent of theearly settlers .... became one of the purchasers of the two-townshiptract. In the spring of 1790 he moved with his family to the Valley andmade it his permanent home..... Bennett drew Lot No. 12 and he owned mostof the land now occupied by Canisteo Village." Daughters of the AmericanRevolution Record No. 20551--Solomon Bennett was a soldier in Wyoming in1778 and also served under Captain John Franklin, 1780/81. Removed toCanisteo where he died. The Articles of Capitulation of 40 Fort weresigned in the cabin of his mother, Mrs. Thomas Bennett, at Wyoming, andthe table was long preserved in the family.
