Solomon Bennett was the son of Thomas and Martha (Jackson) Bennett. Hewas born near Providence, Rhode Island in 1750. He, with his father andbrother, Andrew, had fought in the Pennamite wars and the Revolution, andhe also served as a private in the company of Captain Bidlack in theBattle of Wyoming July 3, 1778. Solomon Bennet was a famous hunter andIndian fighter, a man of great energy and perseverance, and the life ofthe settlement. He was a man of wealth for the times, and took an activepart in the development of the new country. He built in 1793, the firstsaw and grist mill of the Canisteo Valley. This mill was burned by theTories. He was Captain of the first military company organized in SteubenCounty.
