HAYES Dec. 17, 1921-April 14, 2000 Obituary ELKHART - Daniel Eugene “Dan” Hayes, 78, of Elkhart, died at 9 pm. Friday (April 14, 2000) at his home. He was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Saguache County, Colo., the son of Samuel S. and Mary J. (Michaud) Hayes. He married Mary K. Branstetter on March 8, 1946, in Darlington, Ind. She survives with two sons, Gary M. (Susan) of New Jersey and Randy E. (Cecelia) of Elkhart; eight grandchildren; a sister, Irene Sandin of Fremont, Calif.; and five brothers, Neil of Pioneer, Calif., Arnold of Alameda, Calif., and Ivan, Ernest and Perry, all of Elkhart. A sister, Clara Hughes, five brothers, Emile, Lawrence, Harold, Nathan and Samuel, and a half-brother, John, are deceased. Friends may call from 2 pm. to 8 pm. Monday at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home where a Kane Lodge will perform a Masonic service at 7:30 pm. Monday. Services will be at 11 am. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Kurtz will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery where Disabled American Veterans will perform military rites. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital or the World War II Memorial. Mr. Hayes is best known for his service to the City of Elkhart. He was mayor from 1972 to 1976. He also was city councilman from the 4th District from 1964 to 1971 and again from 1984 to 1999. He is a past president of the council. He worked for the Chicago Telephone Supply Co. from March 1941 until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1942. He served 20 months in Europe during World War II, earning five Battle Stars. He was discharged in November 1945 but spent an additional 19 years with the Army Reserve, retiring as a sergeant major. Following the service he was an auto body repairman from 1946 to 1956 and then worked as an insurance claims adjuster until 1969. Then for two years he was purchasing agent for Burkin Homes. After his term as mayor, Hayes worked for Coachmen Industries until 1978 and then Loren Russell Insurance Agency until 1982. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and a former member of Simpson United Methodist Church where he served as trustee, Sunday School superintendent, usher and president of the Administrative Board. He was a graduate of Saguache County High School in Colorado. He also was a member of Kane Lodge, F&AM; Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend; Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne; Elkhart Shrine Club; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, of which he was a past commander. He was a past president of the Monger School and Elkhart City Parent-Teachers associations. www.elkharttruth.com
