Samuel Hayes was born September 3, 1870 in Decatur, Iowa and passed on to his reward June 16, 1949 at the age of 78 years, 9 months, and 8 days. Six months after his birth in Decatur, he moved to the neighborhood of Republic, Texas. There he attended school until he was forced to go to work in the harvest fields. At the age of 13 he left home and journeyed to Sterling, Colorado where he night-herded horses for the first railroad to come into that section of the country. One year later, he moved to Kansas and resided there until he was 21. At this time he moved down to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma and participated in the opening of the Cherokee Strip for settlement. He then came to the San Luis Valley and in June of 1896 he was married to Miss Mable Herndon. To this union one child, John F. Hayes was born. The small family then moved to Watsonville, California where they resided for a short time. Two years later, he returned to Colorado. In 1903 he met Miss Mary Jeanne Michaud and they were married on January 25, 1904. the first child to be born to this union was a girl, Clara Deborah. On May 5, 1905 the family departed for Idaho using a covered wagon for transportation. Four months later they arrived in Grangeville, Idaho where they resided for 14 years. During this time the following children were born: Harry Emil, Jesse Irene, Samuel Mark, Lawrence Albert, Ivan Smith, Nathan Wilson and Oscar Neil. Samuel Hayes and family then returned to the San Luis Valley on May 5, 1918. On June 16, 1918 Lawrence Albert died of Scarlet Fever and brother Harry Emil passed just two days later. Due to the fear of scarlet fever at that time, Mr. Hayes was forced to prepare his own boys for burial and laid them to rest in the Saguache Cemetery with the aid of a very close neighbor. During the next 20 years, Mr. Hayes worked at ranching, mining, and various other jobs. During these years, Mr and Mrs Hayes were blessed with five more children: Ernest Lyle, Daniel Eugene, Harold Harvey, Arnold Lincoln, and Perry Leonard. However on June 4, 1933 Mr and Mrs Hayes had the misfortune of losing their oldest daughter, Clara. Soon after this loss, Mr Hayes health began to fail and in 1942 moved to Saguache where he resided until his death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Mary Hayes, a daughter, Mrs. Irene Sandin of Oakland, Calif.; 10 sons John, Nate, Neil, Dan, Arnold and Perry of Oakland, Sam and Ernest of Elkhart, Indiana, and Ivan and Harold of Saguache; three sisters, one brother, 20 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews plus many other relatives and friends.
