"Jacob Straus: Is a native of Germany, having been born in Laufersweiler, Sept. 29. 1830. He came to this country in September 1855, and engaged in the general mercantile buisness in Ligonier. -The firm name was Straus Bros. & Kauffmann and Straus Bros. from 1855 to 1869, the original firm, being composed of Messrs. F. W. Straus, Jacob Straus and M. Straus. They commenced the banking business in 1870, and also dealtin real estate. Although they were engaged in those lines to some extent prior to that time. From 1870 to 1873 Mr. F. W. and Mr. Jacob Straus composed the firm. In 1880 they built a new bank building which wasdestroyed in the fire of April 1888, but was promptly rebuilt. From April 1883 to 88 the firm name was Straus & co. with Mr. Jacob Straus as the senior member, the orther members where Mr. Goldsmith and S. J.Straus, Mr. F. W. Straus having withdrawn from the firm on account ofmoving to Chicago in 1883. In 1880 Mr. F. W. Straus again became a member of the firm and the business was conducted under the firm name ofStraus Bros., & Co. Mr. Jacob Straus removed to Chicago in August 1892, but he has retained his interest in the business here and has beena frequent visitor to our city. He has contributed his share of material progress of the city, and in his absence his twin sons, Mayor Simon J. Straus and Mr. Ike Straus, who are worthy successors and competent to look after the business in his absence. In this they are ably assisted by Mr. Abe Goldsmith, who has been connected with the banking business in Ligonier since 1884, and is recognized as an able financier."
