Notizen zu dieser Person
Johann was thought to have been born in 1862 on a boat on a river in Russian territory. Helene had told my mother that she thought the family was in the business of shipping cargo and that these people may have lived on an island. Papers that have survived through the years indicate that Johann was born in Glovin near Plotz (Plock). His marriage certificate states that he was from "Plotz, Russisch = Polen". He served in the Russian cavalry as cannoneer, probably as a conscript. He came to Schenectady, New York around 1891 and became an an American citizen on May 11, 1896. It is thought he was a confectioner before he came to America, possibly working with his brother, Christian. Johann retired from General Electric with more than 35 years of service. At the time of Helene's birth, he was listed as a builder of switchboards for GE, I believe he may have been a machinist in later years. There is a record of a Johann Harke arriving in New York in 1890 aboard the Rugia.
Helene had a photocopy of a piece of paper that was presumably written by Johann when he was about 67, however I have no way to know who really wrote it. Mentioned is the city of Dirshau which is approximately 30 miles south of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) on the west bank of the Vistula River and that he went to school in Poland. At that time this area was known as Westpreussen and was under the control of Prussia as Poland had been partitioned between Prussia, Russia and Austria. It also says that his father came from Poland and his mother from Schlesien. Other doucments indicate that Johann was actually born in the Russian partition, including the note on Helene's birth certificate that states he was born on a ship in Russia of German parents.
There is some question as to Johann's middle name. A note on Helene's birth certificate says it was Frederick (Friedrich), but a letter written by Helene says he was Johann Franz. Other documentation simply lists the initial.
Johann served as sponsor at the baptism of Alfred Johann Dettbarn in 1898 and as a witness to the wedding of his daughter Bertha to Walter Sanders in 1914.
