Notizen zu dieser Person

Bertha came to America at the age of 15, from Badelhorne, Kr. Schlawe, Pommern. This was a very small place quite close to Pirbstow. It is known that she came to visit relatives already in Schenectady, however, I have yet to positively identify just who that might have been. A letter written by her cousin Arthur Tressmann and a permission paper written by her father support this trip in 1881, possibly in April. Records in Schenectady show that Hermann, a broommaker, may have come to Schenectady that same year. Could he have been an uncle?

Documents I have record Bertha's birth and baptism and are stamped with the seal for the church in Pirbstow. Other records indicate the family resided at Badelhörne, a very small community at the edge of Pirbstow.

A letter written by her friend in 1891, indicates that Bertha traveled to Europe (Germany) in that year. The letter mentions several names, but none of them appear to be family members. The letter also mentions two babies in Schenectady as Bertha's nieces, most likely Emma and Elisabeth. It is possible that Bertha's trip to Germany was to visit home and family, but I don't have anything to support this.

Bertha married Johann (John) Harke in 1893 in Schenectady. Two of her children died as babies. Cause of death was listed as "milk cholera" for one and "brain fever" for the other. Infant mortality was high in the 1890's in Schenectady as records at Zion Lutheran Church showed many similar deaths then.

She was a sponsor at the baptism of Carolina Bertha Dettbarn in 1883 and Emilie Wilhelmine Henriette Dettbarn in 1885. She also was a witness to the wedding of her daughter Bertha Ida Harke to Walter Sanders in 1914.

Per records at Castle Garden, Albert (I believe to be the same as her brother) arrived in NYC aboard the Neckar on 7 May 1881. It is possible that Bertha was aboard this ship also.
