Allen Thomas Tatum was enrolled in the 44th Battalion of the Petersburg Provisional Reserves of the Confederate Army and quite likely served in the defense of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865. He was in the retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox and was listed among the Confederate soldiers who surrendered there on April 9, 1865. His name, along with other Tatums, is listed in the historical museum in Appomattox. This unit was also known to have been in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg under the command of Col. Norvell Cobb and Maj. Peter V. Batte.

After the death of Mary A. Robinson (Branscomb) Bailey, the estate belonging to her and her deceased husband John Adoniram Bailey consisting of 427 acres was divided into 4 or 5 parcels; Allen Tatum and his wife were deeded a portion of approximately 90 acres. The farm was in Sussex County, Virginia on Route 625. All of the childern of Allen Tatum were born and raised here. Buried on the farm are the Allen and his wife, children: Irene, John and Edna. Also John F. Davis, Louis and Alvin Liverman, and David Howard Tatum and possibly others. (Notes of RWT)
